My Diet & Exercise Thread

For him it's dr's orders, drop mass and reduce muscle tissues. Agreed, it's not often you're told to drop muscle mass, but Boyd's hyper muscled (biceps the same circumferance as my thighs, and we're nearly the same height).

45 minutes endurance yoga.

Tip: if your cable has the on demand feature, fit TV offers about 30 workouts free per month on demand, a good way to try before buying a whole DVD set, or just to swap up the workout some. Flow yoga is a nice 15 min yoga sample.

Morning everyone. Instead of coffee, I am having tea this morning.

I'll have some soup for breakfast in an hour or so but still not too hungry as of yet.

Morning weight.. 219.4 ...... Now I know I didn't loose 5lbs overnight but I forgot something important between yesterday and today. Yesterday I had my jeans and t shirt on, along with cell phone clipped wallet in back pocket etc. So I am going to use this mornings measurement as my baseline.

For the crash diet I'm on today is a veggie day. All the veggies I want to eat along with all the soup.

ok then. Well, I am not sure if you have one, but it would be very helpful to get a heart rate monitor if you can afford one.

If you can, get the kind that tells you how many calories you have and are burning. Very helpful when you can actually see how many calories you have lost doing that aerobic exercise. Then you can pick up the pace if you want to.

It helps to set a goal. "I will burn 400 calories before I stop" ect.
there is also something called the Bodybug" I have heard good things about it. You can Google it.

A few fun ways to lose those calories are dancing (which you can do for a minute or an hour or during commercials.

Road biking, mountain biking lots of fun. In an hour I can burn over 800 calories and it doesn't feel like much effort, just fun. Wear a helmet.

Interval training is great. Especially for beginners. A easy way to do this is just push yourself as long as you are comfortable for and then slow down enough to catch your breath and get ready to push again. That is also why a heart rate monitor is great. You can make sure you are not doing too hard, too fast.

Just push, and when you are tired slow down. Keep that up during your aerobic exercise. Keep pushing and slowing down.
Not only will you build up your indurance, but you burn alot of calories. And it is pretty easy when you can breath again to throw in even short bursts of high level input, even if it is only for 10=20 seconds. It will get longer and longer the fitter you get.

There are lots of great exercises out there. Swimming, walking doing hard yard work.

A good idea is to make sure you keep yourself limber. Gently stretch those muscles before and after you exercise.

And for after you exercise, you need to get some protein and carbs in (especially carbs if you are trying to waste the muscle) but if you can eat or drink something within 45 minutes of stopping then your muscles will be able to use the carbs to put glycogen back into your muscles.

This makes your workout much easier for the next one. Your muscles are not so fatigued. Believe me, this really helps if you work out everyday.

It can be a glass of juice, fruit, any quick acting carb. They make special drinks just for that for endurance athletes.

I love my heart rate monitor. It keeps me on track. It makes eating that cookie difficult when you realize that it just took you 20 minutes of hard exercise to burn off the calories that the cookie will put back in with 4 bites!

Good luck

And for those of you not up to mountain biking or strenuous aerobic activity (you'll get there don't worry) Remember that all activity burns calories.

Even if you just fidget.

Turn on some music at work and in the car and tap your toes, wash dishes by hand instead of the dishwasher, dance, you don't have to be Fred Astair or Ginger Rogers, we're not looking... Sweep the garage, don't drive thru the car wash, get out a bucket and hand wash. When you get to the grocery store, park far away, and then make a lap around the perimeter of the store (where you should be shopping anyway) before you start shopping.

What do you normally do in your day that is automated but can be done manually. Where is there an opportunity to move?

The point is move around, challenge yourself to lift your arms and clap them over your head for an entire commercial, work your way up to doing this for the entire commercial break. Sounds funny but it will get you moving.

Each little fidget will burn minimal calories but all together they can add up.

If you can't afford the gym or don't have time to go, then improvise. You can lay on the floor and bench press a baby. They'll giggle like crazy and you'll enjoy the workout. Don't have dumbells? Go to the kitchen and grab a couple cans. A gallon of milk weighs 8 lbs. Curl it 10 times with each arm before putting it in the fridge.

And have fun! Think poistive, this is all going to help you be a much better you!

Just start walking Boyd. Keep uping your distance. Its the most gentle excerise you can do. Some of the oldest people alive in the world walk everyday. Good luck.
