my dog attacked my duck please help!

X2 and since she is spending more time outside it's not like she is in the carrier constantly. How are they eggs coming? Hatch date??

I'm not sure on Cheese's eggs. They almost seem about the same as the one's that were already in there. I calculated Cheese's hatch day to be next Wednesday the 25th but it could be a little later. She was very iffy when she first started to sit so it was hard to keep track of what day she actually started to incubate. The other eggs hatch day is next Saturday the 28th. I just candled a lil bit ago and all is fine and I see lil beginnings of ducklings moving around in there. I love this part of incubation. I'm just hoping I have better success when it comes closer to hatch day. Out of my last 3 tries none of my eggs ever made it to hatch day. But I also haven't had to throw any out so far, other than some of cheese's.

ETA: Cheese is doing good tonight she's already eaten again and is using her deeper water dish just fine so hopefully she will go back to her normal eating habits. Today was also her last day for her penicillin shot. I must say i'm glad that is over.

Very proud of you for doing what needs to be done. Your reports are so helpful to all of us, and I expect will be helpful to people in the future as well. May the hatch be blessed, and Cheese continue to thrive for a long, long time.

I would imagine, by the way, that losing and growing in feathers must itch, or something very like that.

Thank you Amiga. My friends tell me that I should become a vet with how well I've been dealing with Cheese and her medical needs right now. I told them its a nice thought but it'd break my heart for every animal I couldn't save and I wouldn't be able to deal with it. I'm hoping that it will be a great help to those who end up in the same position as me, although there is no visual aids (blame that on Cheese

) I do try to update as often as possible and to explain what is going on with her and her wounds as best as possible. I hope my lil Cheese is with us for a long time too :) I keep telling her I should change her name to survivor but with her being 2 yrs and knowing I call her Cheese I figured it might confuse her a bit. ***Morning Update*** So this morning when I got home from work I did all my chores first then went to see Cheese and how she was. I was so surprised and shocked when I found her bowl of food empty and food in her water dish. I guess outside time is the best medicine I can give her right now. Her wounds have improved from yesterday but not much. They are looking good and coming along great. I'm glad I haven't had any complications with them (knock on wood). It's supposed to be 71 degrees F today so I brought her outside all ready since after friday its supposed to get cold and rainy again. She again ate as soon as I set her bowl down. I swear she never ate this good before. I hope it lasts. I've also noticed her poop is starting to change color. It's still that blueish green color but she also has some deep brown runny poo. And she pooped white while taking her morning bath. So hopefully she will be back to normal poop colors soon. I'm thinking that it was a funny color just because of her injury because she started it around the same time I started giving her penicillin but yesterday was the last day and it wouldn't be out of her system yet so i'm thinking it was just from the trauma of her injury. I forgot to check her eyes this morning so I will give an update on that later.

I've got her on acv but can switch to the probiotics if needed. Her eyes have already cleared up. She's been outside all day and loved every minute of it. She's doing a lot better and eating wonderfully. I'm so glad she's pulled through this as good as she has. And I thank you two so much for helping us through it! Here's a pic of cheese from today.

of course she's only showing her good side. Its like she knows I try to take pics of her wounds and just refuses to let me.

She looks really good considering what she has been through, it's amazing how tough they are. I think I'd give her some probiotics for about 5days since the Pen kills good and bad bacteria. Then give her ACV maybe 1-2 times a week just as a tonic it is good for the whole flock. How are things going with the dog? with the ACV it's 1 Tab to 1 gal of water. Unpasterized.

Alright I'll switch her over to the probiotics. Not very well I've been keeping him away from the flock until today I brought him over to where he could see them all he wanted to do was chase. He was on a leash of course. I've got a lot of work on my hands with this one. I'm thinking of added another chain where he can see the ducks, so in the morning when I'm feeding and watering them and bear
Is with me Causey can see how bear is with them. I have ducklings coming and will have ducklings all through next spring and summer so if he can't learn to behave with them I'm afraid he's going to
Have to go. I won't be able to be worried about having to go through something like this again all the time or duckling deaths. Hopefully my training skills will work and he will be just like bear some day. I'm just so iffy with him now and probably won't ever fully trust him, but I'd like to be able to have him run freely in the yard. I've noticed some tracks that are none of my animals tracks and im not sure if bear would attack whatever it is or not and I know causey will. So right now we are under complete lockdown and the dogs and I make as many rounds around the yard as possible during the night. Once I get off these midnights it will be just a matter of time before I catch whatever it is.

That's scary hope you can catch whatever it is. Some dogs just never get it their prey drive is just too high I hope you can work it out with him, I have 4 dogs 3 mini dachshunds and a mix bird dog. they cannot be around ducklings or chicks I see the look in their eyes. Once they are full size the dogs don't mess with them but my geese on the other hand have made mortal enemies out of my mix she hates them so I would never leave her with them if I wasn't there. Training is the key and always doing the same thing with training never lax. I had to do this with my dogs and they can all be around my flock it's just not worth it for them to be around the small ones it's the fast movement that gets them going. I learned a lot last year when my dachshund killed one of our ducklings broke my heart for sure.

Oh miss Lydia I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope I can too however I did see a skunk walk through the yard last week so I'm hoping to god that's not what it is as I'm not sure how I'm going to get rid of a skunk. I know with him being a German Shepherd I might just have a problem with that. They say German Shepherd's are most closely related to wolves so I'm hoping his prey drive isn't as bad as it can be. He's a good dog other than what he did to cheese but cheese and other other ducks and geese are a big part of my life so it makes it stressful. I agree I will most likely keep him away from ducklings all the time just because I know what can happen. Although with how much bear loves babies I don't think he'd let causey get ahold of one, but I will never find that out because I'd rather be safe than sorry.
