Last night my sweet dog was so considerate to bring us a baby quail. Little chick was so spooked at first and we helped treat it for shock and it seems to have recovered. It wasn't hurt at all just a little slobbery. We set it up in a small tote last night with wood shaving bedding since we had some left while we've been raising chickens and they're almost done growing. Put the little chick next to a heater and gave him a hidey hole. He's has a small food bowl of Game Feed and a water bowl with clean rocks in it since i read that it helped to prevent them from drowning.
This morning i put some mashed up egg whites in with it's food because i read that was also good for them. It's got a small heat pad in it's little cove and was wondering if there's more i should be doing? He seems like he isn't used to the food just yet but had tried to go for it, as for the water i don't know if it's touched it yet...
I say "he" when in reality i can't tell if its a boy or a girl, I also do not know how old it is, it still has its fuzz but its wings are starting to come in. It seems like it could either be a Mountain Quail or a California Quail based on what we have around here.... I've held it close in my hands to the heater and it'll pass out and take a quick nap (and poop in my hands but thats a normal bird thing), so i think its more comfortable when i'm there holding it. I know they're social birds but i don't think I should put it with the older chicken chicks....
