My dog just bit someone!

I completely disagree with the people who say he's a keeper because he bites. A dog that bites unpredictably is unpredictable.

You've started with the right attitude: your dog can and will bite. Many owners tend not to acknowlege this fact, even when confronted with clear evidence.

I agree with the comments about insurance liabilty. Learn what the laws in your area are. Your dog might be on strike 2 of 3, especially since he bit a mail carrier.

Finally, if you want to keep this dog, get him to a professional trainer, ASAP. He must not bite again, and it's your responsibility to find out why he's biting and to take the necessary measures to prevent it. Prevention may mean anything from a muzzle and training, to putting him down.

personally I feel very strongly about not keeping human aggressive dogs around because you just never know. You could loose your house over this and even if you do have insurance they may drop you especially after two bites

I am a dog lover and have what is considered to be an aggressive breed (although mine are totally NOT aggressive and are in triaining constantly) ..there is absolultely no way if they bit someone I would keep them..I adore these dogs but biting is one thing I can not and will not have..

it is not fair to people or the dogs to keep one who bites and the next bite ..well you have seen the horror stories I am sure

they think they are protecting you that is right but it is the wrong way

you could try some intensive training but that costs quite a lot of money

If you do keep the dog I would never advise putting "Beware of dog" signs anywhere. That's actually something cops advise people against. I don't know how it is everywhere, but here if you have a dog that bites someone, the fines against you and the consequences against the dog go up if you have one of those signs, because the court uses it as proof that you were knowingly harboring a dangerous animal.

When we used to live in the city I used to catch kids taunting our dog all the time. Your dog might have been pepper sprayed but if a kid was rocking or shoving a stick through at your dog that would make him more aggresive to people approaching as well.

Oh and in CA we were advised to put up a sign that said Guard Dog on Duty because Beware of Dog would not do you any good in court.

We had the beware of dog signs before we even had the 2 dogs just to deter someone from coming onto the property. Our other dog is to old and blind to do anything to anyone. You would have to nudge her awake first!

I am sorry that you have to deal with this also , as I have had the same thing but the my dog bit me while he was fighting with another dog. I dont have a beware of dog or guard dog sign. My sign only says Dog on Premises . We have 6 dogs and I know that the ones we leave roam loose are able to be trusted by my family and friends but if they dont know you.... I only have 4 houses in my area and we are at least a 1/2 mile if not more apart but we all know that everyone has dogs and which ones to trust.

It may time but I think you train him to not bite but untill then watch him closely. And dont let just anyone come though the gate without you being there to keep him in check.

Believe me, my dog would still try to hurt (or even kill) a man who was attacking me or he got a bad vibe from. The point is that people who come to the fence are okay, once they walk through the fence it would be a different story. Its teaching him if they stay on the other side, they are okay. But once they get on his side - basically its a free for all, unless the owner gives the person permission to come. Then the dog should do nothing.

We had a rescue dog that bit two people. (Actually, he bit the same person twice.) After talking to three trainers and our vet, we put him down.

Their advice boiled down to: "You probably just discovered why he was a rescue dog. Now you have a tragedy and/or lawsuit looking for a place to happen."

Personally, I can't justify owning a dog that makes independent decisions about who to attack.

I have been through the roll on one of my dogs biting IN MY FENCED YARD. my dog did have to be quarantined, county rules. The bitee took a trip to jail after a trip to the hospital. Posting beware of dog signs are the same as posting no tresspassing signs, I personally post no tresspassing signs. I would ask a attorney if you have doubts. So far the police have beware of dog markings on K-9 cars and they deffinatly have dangerous animals. Most suits as far as I know against K-9 officers have been unsuccessful. I have had a couple judges for friends in my life besides being a retired LEO, I don't know where some people come up with some of the advice I hear told. It will cost you a fee but ask a attorney.

The postman being bit was your fault for having the tote on the gate, otherwise you would be in the clear. The neighbor was totally wrong, NOBODY with or without dogs should be entering a fenced yard whether there are dogs or signs posted or not. Do not encourage anybody to give your dog treats, this is what a criminal does to get dogs to back off or befriend them. And if you do encourage it and someone gets bit then you are liable.
