mine is chicken wire but I have a white tarp and 50% shade cloth on top of it. Mine tend to fly into the south end of the cage towards the light and pool. I need to put a piece of shade cloth part way down the wall so they see it

The deer netting is somewhat good for the top ONLY... It wont stop the dogs, yotes, coons, and other larger pests. I double layer it on the top just to make sure it holds up to a hawk or owl that doesn't see it.. In my opinion, it's a little better than wire for the tops if you have a flighty bird, It don't injure the bird if they fly into it like stretched wire would..

Yes Ive heard of the deer fence and there are lots of different types. In all honesty Im happy with both the chickenwire and the netting. They both have pros and cons. And really Ive never lost a bird in either. And this is the whole time ive kept ducks. But it can definitely happen. Mostly though once a duck figures out the pen hes in its rarely a problem. An example of this is when you add new birds and say a hawk swoops down a new bird will generally fly right up into the top and the hawk may grab him.Wire or netting. While all your birds you have had for awhile will all go for the water be it pools or ponds. Takes about 2 weeks for them to get comfy with their surroundings. Sometimes less. Another thing that tells me they are'nt stupid is when I go in the pen with the catch net. They treat that just as bad as the hawk.

If I have to have the door open for any reason all I have to do is prop that net up and they avoid the area like a plague whether Im there or not.

When I do have problems with the wire on the top, it is with game birds such as quail, chukar, and every once in a while a pheasant..

Another thing I liked in the big pens I had, was by 200 feet, flying they were up to full speed. New ones would just crash into the netting and bounce off it. The old vets in there though, well they looked like they were on a Nascar track. They'd wait til the last second, turn that tail and shoot right back to the other end. Was pretty cool watching just how well they knew their surroundings.

So true!!! even in my pen. I would love to see that in Kangababy's pen. Thats the kind of stuff that makes you love keeping birds.

I am using this on the tops currently and it works really well. I have oak trees and palm trees that drop leaves ect and it is holding up nicely.

It's UV coated, but will let you know as it is on the newest run. The price is very good, and it is easy to work with too.
