Well, off the subject, but out of those 12 brahma eggs, (6 of which started under a duck, the other 6 under another duck, both lots then being moved to 2 different chickens to finish off, having lost some to a lizard, others went bad..)....one hatched out and died, as you know, and then...da-dah.....The sole survivor, a noisy, strong partridge brahma chick, and the chicken is very protective of it. Look at those fluffy little tootsies!

Customer demand,

I started selling my extra eggs locally to my friends, then they told more friends....well most free-range egg suppliers around here are are just the farmers whose wives or kids go hunting about most days to collect eggs. Needless to say, some customers get some nasty surprises when they crack them open! My eggs are collected every day so they´re really nice and I have more people that want them than I have eggs...so, when I don´t have enough I tell them that the hens are resting and they just have to wait! It´s only a few weeks. At the moment although my chickens are doing funny things, my muscovies are being productive, so I´m doing a mixed dozen eggs, half and half, and muscovy eggs are very popular here.
same here . im getting 2 /13 BR eggs but i have 3 dozen Pekin eggs in the frig! haha we use the duck eggs and a few of the customers have switched to duck now too - at least till the chickens are off of rest - the others are still on the wait list

i dont use lights or anything and they all seem to understand and will wait :) my girls are looking less ragged and combs are getting red again so i hope thats a good sign molt is over ? and production will pick up

No, it died. It warmed up, cheeped loudly, thrashed about and died. There you go, that´s how the cookie crumbles....
o no! poor baby :(

Have you taken advantage of their rest and wormed them? Get them all fit for the laying months ahead?....
The pics of the chickens...are these the breeds you´re waiting for?
Is the first one a brahma? Do I see fluffy legs there? I can´t remember, do you already have brahma? , it would seem that brahma would be a good breed for you, as, although they lay fewer eggs and do get broody, they have the reputation of laying more during the winter than some others. ISAs(Red star etc) are great for good egg production. I´m not much up on the other breeds, I don´t have them.
Some of my chickens started eating eggs! I discovered it was the Delawares, I only have 3 of them. So I´ve separated them and made a nest box where the eggs roll away. They used it to lay a few eggs..great! but then I´ve not found any eggs in there for a few days. I suspect they´re having a rest because of the weather (wet) and I´ve not heard any egg-song from them. So I´m hoping I´ve out-witted them, but it´s an on-going battle! I´m determined to get eggs out of them one way or another. The other chickens are all ok...ISAs and brahmas. Meanwhile, I´m collecting the muscovy eggs until each one goes broody, then I leave her with 2 to hatch.

no i havent ... these are my first layers and i have heard conflicted reasons to worm or not to worm .... some say its needed others say its not .im not trying to be stupid but i dont know what to do honestly - i want them healthy and happy thats all.
yes thats Brahmas , then a Barnevelder SP? then GLWs then Salmon Faverolles supposedly all good winter layers - all females too as i have no roos, drakes, or ganders here on my farm and im ordering pre-sexed chicks too - i only have BRs now and ducks and geese so i thought a lil different coloring to the flock and their temperament and hardiness would mesh well w my flock already.... well see .

Oh, that´s interesting, I´ve not read anything about not to worm. Are your birds on "virgin soil", where no chicken has gone before?
lol.png
You may be ok.
I worm all the animals i have here, I just don´t do it very often as I rarely see anything in their poop. Actually, I only ever found a worm in a duck´s poop, so the lot got wormed again, but I usually only do it a couple of times a year, when they´re not producing. You can help to reduce the probability by giving them ACVinegar, but as mine free-range I do worm them. Goodness, the wild birds have them, my ducks visit other fields where dogs do their business and cats also do their business in the grass, so there must be some contamination of some sort here. I ´d hate to lose one of my geese through worms, and an out-of-sorts chicken won´t lay well if she´s wormy.
I hope you get what you want with the chicks!

hmmmmm interesting ... yes they are the first on this land lol my first flock and i added the ducks then the geese now the new chicks - i grew up in 4-h with all sorta stuff but that was at my parents - and of course we wormed hogs and steers and my Mil lives just down the road but her flock has never been here - so yes completely virgin lol i dont even let anyone in my coop except me and my husband - no need to track any unwanted crud in from anywhere - its a chicken coop not a zoo .
i have wormed my dogs of course when needed but because of my free ranging chickens and other fowl i always made them do their business in a far corner of the yard and disposed of the feces and sprayed the area down . also in the warmer months - every week i take a hose to the whole yard as far i can blast the water i dispose of all the poo- dog chicken duck and goose... lord it takes i bet 2 hrs .... ive never seen anything in the poo but maybe your right and since they arent laying i should ... ive gotten 1 egg in 3 days now from all 13 of the BRs grr drives me insane !!

Sounds like fun with the egg!     !!Just be patient with the laying, they´ll get back to it.  I have some ISA browns, Rock-mixes and Brahmas, so I have a fairly constant supply of eggs, but even the ISA browns have their breaks.  Right now I have 2 out of 3 moulting Rock-crosses laying, and  3 out of 5 non-moulting ISAs laying! The brahmas are brooding. Some days I pick up 7 eggs, some days just 2! :(

About 2 months ago I went to a place that sells birds.  It´s all very pretty there and they´re well looked-after, but they charge a packet and I refuse to pay those prices, so I asked him if he had any brahma eggs for sale that the chickens had laid.  He said that as it was raining the chickens wouldn´t lay.  OK, interesting I thought.  So I paid more attention to mine, and I think it´s a theory that´s a bit hit-and-miss. Maybe there´s something to it.

Also, the shortest day has a lot to do with it, and it´s just around the corner!  When the days start getting longer, you´ll see them start to lay again.

I tend to get more eggs when it's raining - I've always put it down to that they would rather be in the coop (where the nesting boxes are) than out in the rain - oh and while were here.....
