I’m a brand new chicken mother, of 8 chicks. I’ve been interested in raising my own chicks for eggs for a couple of years, as I have a friend that has been doing it. Oh, and let’s be honest, fresh eggs are the absolute best! So, about 4 weeks ago, my family embarked on a journey and purchased 8 chicks. The first 5 were already 3 weeks old, as the feed store didn’t tell me when the chicks arrived as they said they would. Of those 5, I have 1 Rhode Island Red and 4 (Americanas) or what I have learned and believe are Easter Eggers. I wanted 8, so I found another feed store that, I was unaware had just gotten some chicks the day before. So, I decided on 3 sweet Barred Rocks, over Cuckoo Marans.
Now, we have completely secured the coop and run because my big girls needed more space, and they were getting antsy in their brooder crate (didn’t realize how fast they grow once their feathers are fully in). Last night we put the girls in the coop. Can I just say, my anxiety was pretty high last night!! However, this morning they are perfectly fine. They still won’t come out of the coop into the run, and I don’t know what I should do about it.
Moving in, I’m a wife, and mother of 4 children (which also grow up very quickly) 2 are grown, and the last 2 are freshman and senior in HS.
I found this website through multiple searches as I’m trying to grow my knowledge of raising backyard chickens.
My dream.... find a large piece of property to have my own farm.... I’m a country girl in a big city, but grateful for living in an area that I can have chickens.

I agree with @Pork Pie. Sometimes it takes a day or two for them to get comfortable with their new surroundings.
