Hello,

When I was taking photo of my chicken feet (she has scaly mites) I saw that she has big spurs ( I never noticed that she has them).
Also she has so much bigger wattles and comb than before, the color is so much brighter too!
I dont know what is happening here? Do you have any idea what causes this change?
I hope she will be ok, she is such a good girl!

You can remove the outer keratin sheath of the spur with flat head pliers. There are YouTube videos explaining how. The bony core of the spur will be there. It's a form of grooming her.

No reason to remove spurs if they're not causing issues. You can also just remove the sharp tips with dog nail trimmers if you're worried about her accidentally scratching you if you pick her up.

And yes they can develop later in life.

Spurs can grow on both hens and roosters. How old is she? She looks like a healthy, mature, laying female to me
I’ve posted somewhere else, but one of my hens is opening her mouth and looking at the sky every once in a while. Any ideas, since no one has answered, and you sound like you know your chickens?
