Hello again. I haven't posted in a while cause I thought I had everything figured out. Now I need more help please. So a little back ground, in June 2020 we got chicks. Now they're almost a year old. We had two roosters but got rid of one cause they were fighting. So now I have 9 hens and 1 rooster.
Which bring me to my problem. 4 of my female chicks have no feathers on their backs. I got scared, so I asked my friend who has had many many chickens about it. She said it from my rooster getting in top of them. I asked her how I can prevent this, she said I really don't know.
So my question to y'all is: Is there a way I can prevent this from happening? Are my hens hurting? They don't seem like they're in a lot of pain. So maybe hiding it? I'm so scared and worried about them hurting.
Thanks for all the advice before hand and now🙂

There is no way to prevent the rooster from jumping on there backs. He jumps on there backs to mate with them to fertilize the eggs.
Since its Spring, he gets more aggressive during mating because his instincts tell him he needs to fertilize the eggs so they will hatch.
That is why you are suddenly seeing bare backs on your hens. Is it painful? I can't imagine its comforabtle, but chickens are also very pain tolerant so they handle it better.
I would try a hen saddle, but don't by the ones that loop around the wings or around their necks. The ones on the wings cut my hens wings balky from rubbing, and the ones around the neck slide sideways. Spend the extra money and by these- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0816VNKP...olid=12M0ZDM6JUG03&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
THey're durable, and go around the wings without pulling on them and rubbing, and go around the neck without sliding. The underside is also a material that wont rub. Most are made of durable fabric which rubs, but these are made of softer fabric on the bottom.

Ok thanks I'll look into a saddle! I'm not sure what's wrong with my hens. My friend had babies with the rooster I have her a few months ago but mine don't lay or sit if eggs. My hens just lay them and leave em.

Nothing is wrong with your hens at all. When Jungle fowl, (chickens wild ancestors) were domesticated, they only played 10-15 eggs a year. That shows how much domestication and breeding we've done to make them may 300+ eggs a year.
With doing all that breeding, it takes the instinct to hatch chicks out of them. Since they have people feeding them and keeping them alive, the instance to reproduce is less. Thats why most breeds, especially Sex-links, and crosses like that, don't hatch eggs.
Silkies are a very common breed to go broody though. Some hens try to brood over once a year.

Wow good information! Makes sense why they don't want to hatch any. I'm getting 10-13 eggs a day! I think they're also not laying is cause my hens are all different types and the rooster us definitely a different type then they are. Thanks for this information to! I wasn't worried about it I was just curious. Makes tjns if sense.
