Hi again Cynthia,

Good to hear that Ivy is still with you - maybe my tears helped in some way.... my Husband was shocked to see me in floods of tears a few days ago, I explained to him about Ivy and your wonderful attempts to save her - many a lesser person would have given up but you have persevered with her and we are all enjoying the rewards of Ivy gaining strength - you have such a following and we are all hoping and praying for both you and Ivy!

I can only hope that I can be as strong and positive as you when I face illness and problems with my chickens, ducks and geese, so far I have been fairly fortunate. I love my babies and I have had to face the death of young ones which was devastating but my older girls are such characters - I have some chicks of a few days old and like one of your other supporters I am going to name one of the females Ivy in honour and respect for you and your Ivy - If I could grant miracles then the only one I would grant would be for you and Ivy to be together for a VERY long time to come!

Very Best Wishes

Suzie

Thank you, Suzie, you're so sweet. Ivy was my very first Barred Rock and Lexie was purchased to keep her company in the brooder. The feedstore owner pushed a deformed BR chick into my hands when I pointed out she had a badly crooked neck. I protested, saying I couldn't put one lone chick in the brooder, so she grabbed another one out to keep the first one company. That second one was Ivy. Took them home and it became obvious that the first baby should be euthanized so had to go back to the feedstore to get another BR pullet to keep Ivy company, which was Lexie. That's how my love of Barred Rocks started four years ago.

She has a 250 watt heat lamp over her and is in the Delaware coop's broody pen. I think she'll be fine. Now, the chicks are back in the living room for about three or four more days (should I say "smelly days"?).

I spent all weekend gone wondering if I would read she had passed during that time. I'm glad she's still with you in one way, but wondering if she is in any pain in another. It's like have a human we love and knowing we should let them go but we can't bring ourselves to do it.

I know it's got to be so hard on you going through this with her. She's a lucky bird.

Honestly, she does not seem to be in pain, she isn't straining at all and actually seemed pretty content in the house. She is eating and drinking okay. The only thing seems to be that she is a bit out of breath from time to time from the pressure on her organs, but other than that, she seems better since she is now warm.

She is not out of the woods, certainly, but she isn't suffering at the moment. If things go south, we'll have to let her go, but DH checked on her out in the broody pen and she is fussing a little, probably because she's alone now instead of in the house with us, but she is quite warm out there.
