My Ivy.. Latest Relapse...She's Gone

Now that is amazing!!! WAHOOOOO!!!! Maybe it was just the awful winter that brought them down- Cynthia, if it was some illness, and they pulled through it, it really is because of your exemplary care- you made sure they had the nutrition and warmth and safe place so they could concentrate all their energies on getting better- not to mention knowing they are loved. . . .what beautiful girls!!!

Robin, I'm so sorry about Barbara. I have a young BR pullet that I've named Barbara as well. It's hard to lose them and feel so helpless.

I really believe that Ivy is only alive now because she is such a strong, overall healthy girl. I wasn't sure she'd make it to four years old after all she's been through, but she has, amazingly.

So sorry, Robin. You know here in southern Missouri we had a very mild winter but watching the news, I can't believe the winter most of you have had let alone the horrible rains lately. They say El Nino will present us with a hot summer? I think perhaps it does effect our poultry and livestock. Hoping you all have a better year.

Ivy is dying. She may be gone by tomorrow or the next day. For two days, she had lain under the coop or by the gate with Lexie right by her side, touching her and looking into her face from time to time. They are inseparable. Lexie is keeping vigil over her sister. Ivy is still walking and drinking, but has little interest in food. Her eyes are tired and vacant and the pressure on her organs from the crud that fills her abdomen is making her breathing labored. When she lays down and doesn't get up, we will bring her inside to put her to rest, but I want Lexie to have as much time with her as possible. Dutch and Zane are Lexie's sons and Fern is Ivy's daughter, so their legacy will continue here with Barbara, who is Fern's daughter, as well as Panda and Riley, who are both Lexie's granddaughters.
Here they are in the brooder over four years ago, Lex on the left and Ivy on the right:
