She's still "in it to win it", but she doesn't look good, poor dear. She still shows interest in her food and manages to walk to where she wants to go. The hen has a strong constitution, for sure.

Cyn that is how those old head hens are.....tough women! Bless her heart, she has one strong will.

Ozark - so sorry about your Lucy

Carrie, I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your Lucy. Such a sweet little girl, and she fought a long hard fight. I hope that you can find joy in your memories of her. May she rest in peace.

Cyn, I'm still crossing everything and saying a little nightly prayer for Ivy. Every day she stays is one more day to build lasting memories upon.

She keeps surprising us day by day, bless her valiant heart!

Here's hoping that she has many more good surprises in store for all of us.

Thanks to each of you. Lucy was so special. She came into the house to raid the dog's food bowl every chance she could get. Lots of fun-smiley memories. Same for Ivy and her sisters. Lots of smiley memories.

Well, I guess it was only a matter of time before one of my hens would be added to this list of precious girls with internal laying issues. Abigail, who usually lays a terribly thin shelled egg is having more serious problems now. From everything you have described Cynthia, I'd have to say she is suffering from internal laying as well. Up until today she has always managed to get the egg all of the way out before it breaks. Today though, it broke just before it exited her vent. Can internal breakage be far behind? And knowing that this is what lays ahead doesn't make it any easier.

Cynthia, Carrie, if either of you fine ladies has any advice I'd be so grateful to hear it. Abby is such a sweet little girl. (aren't they always?

) She has always been such a quiet, gentle and kind bird. I'd hate to loose her if there's anything I can do to keep her around for a few more years yet. Vitamins perhaps? She has plenty of free choice oyster shell, and free ranges every day with her sisters. Plus lots of table scrap goodies and soon there will be fresh organic lettuce and other veggies from the garden. She is healthy in every respect otherwise. I can't imagine anything else I could be doing for her, but you ladies have far more experience with this issue than I do. I'm so hoping that you might have some answers for treating internal laying in its early stages. Thanks girls.
