Holly was from Fern, who Fern is from Ivy??? I am tryin to figure out who Lexie comes in the family tree, Dutch being the son of Lexie.....Dutch sired Holly????? oh, how did your old man Barred Rock roo you had played a part in it, was he the double grandfather of Holly?

time for a pencil and paper to see the who's who in the pedigree of your Barred Rocks LOL!

LOL, I can't believe you remembered all that, Robin! Dutch was the son of Lexie and Hawkeye. Lexie and Ivy are probably not actually related, they just came in the same shipment from Ideal. Fern is the daughter of Dutch and Ivy. Holly and her brother (2 and 3 wks old, respectively) and Barbara (24 wks old) are both the daughters of Fern and granddaughters of Ivy and Hawkeye, Dutch's kids. Dutch is the sire of Holly and Barbara as well as Fern. So, Dutch is the father to Fern as well as father to Fern's daughters and son. Lexie is the grandmother of Holly and her brother, Fern and Barbara. Okay, I'm giving a test!

Double Dutch, and Double Hawkeye lines LOL! Double Lexie and once to Ivy.

oh I hate tests! Nervous Nellie during my high school ACT/SAT tests LOL!

Who would be Holly's future hubby? You can linebreed to Hawkeye's lines like a son or grandson of his. Not sure if the next generation of Barred Rocks would be going to be Dutch since you already getting pretty close in linebreeding.

You know, I'm debating keeping the little cockerel, Holly's brother. Not sure I really need him. Currently, my BR hens are in the main laying flock with my Delaware, Isaac, as leader. I may keep no males this time. I have two, the BR and an EE I think is male, son of my EE June with Isaac. I really don't need more birds, but I will keep Holly for sure and maybe Riley's baby, Bandit, if she is really a she. Other than that, I need to allow my numbers to dwindle. Just wish it wasn't always by internal laying/egg peritonitis.

Since Delawares got Barred Rock blood, maybe the future chicks would not have that egg problem gene passed on. I am sure you know what to do best! I know it is hard to bring down the numbers particuarly in the coming fall months that most of us would cut back.

Every cloud has a silver lining, and by the sounds of things Cynthia, your current cloud is no exception. You have all of these wonderful progeny from Ivy and her years with you. I so hope that you can find peace and comfort in the knowledge that even though Ivy will be gone in body, her spirit and her genes will carry on, long, long, long after she is gone!

I still hold out hope that some day I may be privileged enough to adopt one of her grand daughters or grandsons [a.k.a. EGGS!

] With the possible exception of Isaac descended Dellie babies, I can't think of birds I would more want to include into my flock!

I just picked up Bandit, Riley and Isaac's chick, and at three weeks old, there is pink in the comb.

So, looks like Bandit, June's baby most likely, and, of course, Fern's baby, all boys. Nora has three boys. And Panda's Blue Orp seems a bit boyish though the jury is still out, so little Holly is probably the only girl from those two broodies. Maybe Smoky's baby, who is due to hatch in a week, will be a girl for you, Beth. I hope.

Ivy is still sitting at the back of the cage. She did take a bite or two of grape from me, but when she dropped it, she'd peck in the air, like she couldn't see well, just like Tiny does. She is more alert than this morning, but I know that won't last. Lexie still wants to stay with her sister, bless her heart.
