My journey towards chickendom!

I got the yard raked out! This will be the area for the chickens, minus the tools, trash can, and grill on the table.

The table is staying in the yard for extra shelter outside the coop, and the chair is staying as a chicken play item.

They'll also have access to this area behind the house:

I need to fence off the end of it so they can't get out and build the divider fence by the stairs.

I got a coop for $150! Never been used, just been sitting outside! There are nest boxes on the left side just outside the photo.

I'm not using it as it is meant to be used. That is SUPPOSED to be the coop and run... pfffft. The whole thing is the coop. I'm adding boards over the wire for the winter and keeping them off in the summer for extra ventilation. It needs to be about 3 sq. feet bigger, so I'm pulling off the back panel and adding on some extra room with some scrap wood. It'll be awesome!

Exciting stuff!

Awesome savage destiny. I too am starting out on the path to "chickendom". So i will definitely be keeping an eye (well two eyes) on this thread.

Best of luck. Please keep updating.

How very cool!! We are also starting this journey this spring - can't wait! Good luck with chickendom! Love your humour about the coop you bought - pfffft indeed! lol!

BTW...love the pup on your avatar! I'll look forward to your updates. What kind of chickens are you planning for your beloved 4?

Well, really now... the whole thing, excluding next boxes, is 2.5' x 5.25'. That is not nearly enough room for even 2 chickens! But it's perfect for what I want once I make it a tad bigger. :)

I only know one breed for sure. My friend is giving me a Gold Laced Wyandotte who is just at the point of lay. :) I am not sure what the other 3 girls are going to be! It will depend on what I can find in my area. We do have a poultry swap coming up in June, but I'm hoping to have the girls before then!

Here are a couple pics of the hen my friend is giving me. I'm thinking of naming her Sylvia.

I'm in love with her already!

OMGoodness! How could you NOT be?? Sylvia - perfect - is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!

I know! I can't quite believe my friend is giving her to me. She doesn't even really want to get rid of her, she just wants to give her to me since she knows I'll spoil her rotten. :)

Beauty! What a gorgeous golden colour. What breed is she?

She is a Gold Laced Wyandotte. :)

Beautiful bird. Don't forget to dig fencing in under the coop to keep digging predators out. Congrats on you coop find!

I'm not too worried about predators where I am. We live smack in the center of town, and there's no raccoons, weasels, etc. around here. The only potential predators are dogs and cats, which with my ridiculously high fencing should be kept well out.
