My leukemia's back.

Suzie, quick and easy biscuits:

2 cups flour (I use 1 cup flour and 1 cup Bisquick)
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup milk

Table spoon sized portions dropped on a greased tray - cook at 450 F for around 15 minutes.

Hey, Rachel, we're turning your 'getting better' thread into a cooking thread.

Thanks so much sourland...I'll try this...

Hey Rachel...I can make some for you and post from France.....may take some days BUT...burned biscuits...can make all the difference...!

It's all good. I find cooking is one of the things I miss when I'm not home!

Good day today. Went to a friend's house and just visited for a while, nice to feel normal and have girl time!

I went to the dentist today and it was kind of weird. I have to have a dental clearance before the transplant, basically to say there's no infections or anything in my mouth that's going to rear up and kill me when my immune system's killed off. Well, the dentist found a lot of work that needs to be done...no surprise, I haven't been since I was diagnosed

. Anyway, I don't have insurance and he's talking 3K in work....that's not going to happen! Then, reading the form the transplant center gave me to have him to fill out, he's supposed to call them and consult before doing any treatment, which he did not.....hmmm. He's out of the office tomorrow so I'll have to wait for monday to straighten things out. With all that work, he's wanting to block out like 3 hours and his schedule and my schedule aren't meshing. Okay, put that away until Monday, can't do anything about it so enjoy the sunshine!

We're not getting any ham steaks with our pork, but we are getting deli sliced ham. I've never had a butcher offer this before and we're psyched to get it! Of our 4 hams total, we're getting 3 as deli sliced and only one as ham ham. So looking forward to having a freezer full of pork!

Did you have them save the fat, especially over the kidneys? The fat over the kidney renders to leaf lard. Leaf lard is the best fat to use for making pie crusts since it has nearly no pork flavor to it.

I was just thinking about mouth health this week. It is very important to our health yet is not covered by most insurance plans. You should not have to spend that much money for dental work.

I believe I asked them to save the lard. Chemo brain makes me unreliable at times, though. Apparently they had issues with installing their new freezer system, so it won't be ready to pick up until Tuesday. I won't be home until Thursday afternoon, so bacon and eggs Friday morning!

That will be a great treat!

With my counts being acceptable, I braved leaving the house today. Where did I go, my first place out of house arrest? The Grange, of course

. Bought a toy for the pup, and 4 big bales of shavings for the birds. I'm telling you, a bale of shavings is the best $10 I ever spend! I love how it looks spread over the coop, and the smell of pine...love it! Then, watching the birds scratch through it and dust bathe.

When I started dumping shavings, there was one of my mature hens in the nest box. She freaked out and made a fuss and took off while I spread the shavings. I put a nice thick layer in the nest boxes and just stood back to rest. As she was coming back, the oldest cockerel hopped in there and started trying to impress her with his house hunter ability. He's all cooing and clucking and scratching around the nest---basically kicking all the shavings out--while she's pacing outside the box making a growling sound "Hey buddy, things are getting urgent here!". He just kept scratching in there, trying to impress her. She pretty much had to go in and kick him out to lay, he's all offended she gave him the boot..it was hilarious to watch.

The feed store was getting set up for baby chicks, with the tubs all in place and the accessories out front. It kind of made my heart hurt a little, not being around for chick season this year. But as my oldest son pointed out, I'm skipping this year so I'll be around next year....kind of hard to argue with that logic

. Plus, I'm still holding out hope I'll do well enough to be able to hatch some of my own this summer....
