Morning all!
Today will basically be a "clean all the animals' stuff" day. There are worse things, right?
I have three clutches of chicks about 2 months old. With the time and effort it took to butcher those roosters last week, I'd just decided to start culling them young and not worry about butchering.
But then, last night, I realized I'm going to want a replacement for Tom next spring....so that means keeping probably a few to choose from. I guess I'll have to decide what I want color-wise, and pick out a few to grow out.
I don't like the idea of culling chicks, they're so small and cute and it's hard to get past. Put doing 4 roosters in one day literally wiped me out for the rest of the day, and even the next day I wasn't much good hand-wise. Plus, these are layer bred birds, so there's really not much meat there. I'm going to have to just put on the big girl panties and get over it.
4 more roosters in the grow out pen. None of them are really potential keepers, but they all seem pretty light weight. I'll maybe wait a few more weeks, but I'm really wanting that pen space! I'm trying to pick up a few Delaware hens today......that's another breeding project, of course.
