Hi guys. I have a small well fed and cared for little flock of eleven. Two weeks ago one of my young orpingtons was fine one day and dead the next. She ate well but was bone thin when she died. Now my youngest layer is dying in my arms as I type. she was quiet yesterday but ate and today she's dying and I don't know why. They have been treated for mites and I can't find any on her. Why do they die. I'm beyond upset. The one dying is friendly and smart and almost gone. Any suggestions. I'm very attached to my birds. She is two. I had one bantam that was ten years old before a friends dog killed her. My little bantam is just breathing quietly with her eyes closed and slowly leaving me . I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks for reading this.

First off I am sorry and I hope your chicken makes it. Have you considered that she might have worms? What color is her feces and is there even any?

Feces are hard to tell whose is whose but I clean every day and didn't see anything weird. I didn't know chickens got worms. I haven't seen any in their poop but how else would I tell and what do I do to worm them. I'm afraid it's too late for this little chick.

All lot of people don't know that, don't be hard on yourself. Some of the signs of worms include dull comb and wattles, overall sluggishness, decreased egg laying, dehydration, going off alone, loss of balance. These signs don't mean she is gauranteed to have them , just that she could.

This little hen "blanch" has no comb or waddle. She always jumps up on a bar and I hand feed her. She follows me and hasn't shown any signs of being sick or off. I gave her some bread yesterday as a treat like I've done for a year and she seemed fine. I check and add feed twice a say as we'll as clean both waterers. I am baffled.

Hmmm, well then I am sorry I didn't have an answer, I'll keep thinking and I hope someone can answer you.

Your best bet will be to post this in the Emergencies/Injuries/Diseases section under the Forum tab at he top of the page. Click on Forum then Raising Backyard chickens then Emergencies/Diseases. There are experts on such things there who will know how to help you very quickly.

Good luck to you....Hope she improves

At the top of the posts and beneath the last one on a page is a Box that says START A NEW THREAD just click on and you are good to go. Sorry I didn't see this sooner,

waiting can be horrible. Is there any chance your birds happened to consume something toxic, even bread with a slight mold can do theM in. I don't know if you live in one of the communities that had flooding but, that could spoil anything - even their feed, if it got wet.
