I have two cockerels that survived out of a batch of five. It was hysterical to watch the Dutch Bantam cockerel, Zapraska, try to mate with the Sapphire Gem pullet, Poppy, who was from the same batch of chicks. My rooster has the same problem. Depending on which way the hen is traveling when he decides to hop on, sometimes lands them both face down in the dirt. I feel so bad for them.
He'd latch onto her hackles, hop onto her back, and try to mate... Poppy would simply duck her head and lift her tail, and Zapraska would flip over her head and onto the ground.
Or he would fail to mount her properly and he would roll off to the side.
Watching an inexperienced bantam cockerel try to mate with a standard-sized hen is quite amusing.
