Turkeys. I’ve been trying to read your turkey thread but it’s so long that I’ll never catch up.

That is what I want. My ducks didn’t really provide exactly what I was wanting. I still love on them even though I know they aren’t that thrilled. But I’ve heard turkeys are very loving.

I’ve been trying to read through your turkey thread but it’s long. I’ll have to ask you some questions about them. I love watching Kyle the Rooster on YouTube. Don’t know if you’ve seen it or not, but it’s a hoot. All those turkeys strutting around and that one, Jeffery, dances. I’m not sure what that’s all about, but it’s funny. And Kyle, oh lord! You’ll have to watch it, but not unless you’re immune to cuss words.

We don’t have a lapper right now, I had Snitch but I gave her to Holm. We are going to cut down and I didn’t want to eat Snitch.

She would run up to me and tell me all the bad stuff the other turkeys were doing. If they broke into the feed she would come and tell me. If they were in the garden, she would come tell me.

If I sat on a bale or tank around the barn she would jump up next to me cock her head and talk to me. In fact she never shut up all she wanted was to talk to me.

We had Ethel and JJ they were lappers. JJ would go for walks with us, we would be walking with 2dogs and a turkey.

Ethel was killed by a coyote, JJ was attacked by a younger Tom and must have gotten a brain clot. He had a stoke like symptoms. After two weeks in the house, he could not lift his head, it was like his front half stopped working.

We cried putting him down.

He was so cool. He would protect me from the other toms. Toms kind of think of people as big Toms. They will try to become top tom by fighting you. JJ knew I was top tom, he never came at me, but if another one did, JJ would intercede and protect me by putting the other Tom now.

We have 4 Toms and 17 hens (I think). One of the Toms is a loner, the other three we call the Three Amigos. They follow us. Run to us if we see them, talk to us. No bird I have ever owned shows the personality and love as a turkey.

Awe, I love it. Everything you just talked about is some of what I’ve read. Do you still have these turkeys?

I am afraid I will go through the same dang thing with finding a Tom that I did with finding a good roo.

You need a couple turkeys, maybe three hens or two hens and a tom.. if you only have two hens you will need a hubcap or colored rock for the Toms.

They will over mate the hens otherwise.

I don’t know the breeds apart as far as heritage vs broad breasted. Isn’t that what the others are called and I guess they’d be similar to meaties with all the health problems. I had never thought about that.
