I grew up much poorer than you rich Southie plantation types did. We “read” our Sears or Wards catalogue daily, but the reading was much faster in the winter. :old
At my grandmother’s, those catalogs were stacked up and used as booster seats for the grandchildren!

Those catalogues were essential to us back then...

I grew up very poor, the other essential in our lives was potato soup. We were overjoyed (well us kids were) when a cow had to be put down, it meant meat.
That is sad, but a very real part of our lives back then. Thing is, back then when we didn’t have smorgasbords available, but we also didn’t have all the “extras.” To put it in today’s terms, that means there may not have been a lot of food available, but we also didn’t have name brand shoes, high dollar bikes, and definitely no high dollar phones! Agree?

SEMI-RANT is totally fine!!! I only have you all to converse with about duckie stuff so it’s nice to hear other’s experiences. I can’t believe that mine are only a week behind yours and are acting totally different!!
And I will say that I think your experience with their behavior and being so pushy has a lot to do with the time of year. Last year all my boys became teenagers in fall and they were sooo chill. Then March came around and well... no more sweet drakes that like cuddles and peas and hello raptors that eat toes for breakfast 😑
That’s another thing I’m upset about, my duckies do not like being held much anymore. Well, more like not at all. When I do get one up in my arms, unfortunately I’m not able to hold them too long. They all know how to make me put them down... quickly! They will squeeze out a big old sh** and it manages to get all over me — on my top and then down onto my shorts. The last poop managed to run into my shorts pocket where my phone was.

And Ralphie, Ralphie Dux that is, has started following me, running up behind me and then speeding up to pass me and run in front of me. He has also then tried to nibble my toes. What the ......? He’s a tad touched, I believe. I assume that is normal, though aggravating, behavior.

I loved my all drake flock but I didn’t introduce the females until two months after the boys turned into monsters so I think it was gonna happen either way 😕 a month ago I got rid of two drakes and it was so peaceful with just the three but there was an accident and one of the two I gave away had to be put down so I took back the other so he wouldn’t be alone and now we are back to the raptors again... I guess I know now that three or less is the number for males with this bunch...
Today, my little flock of 5 ducks reminded me of my first hatch of chicks, 4 pullets and 7 cockerels. Those 7 males acted in such a way they reminded me of a rogue group of thug-ass rapists. Sweet memories, huh? My chickens were peacefully enjoying the afternoon dust bathing and preening when all of a sudden a waddling wave came thru the chicken yard with heads down, necks stretched, and bills open! For real? I have no idea what prompted that. It totally ticked me off. My poor chickens scattered in all directions.

Definitely a different way of life.

All very true. The poor and youth of today have all these things yet have no clue what the Sears Roebuck catalog was mostly used for.

We ate a lot of chickens, and Milk was free, thus potato soup. During the summer it was rhubarb over baking powder biscuits.
My family was growing lot's of vegetables and we had plenty of fruit trees in the yard. I will never forget the red-currant and the cherry syrup my mom made nor her apple sauce. And i still love to eat vegetable soups.
Tried to grow rhubarb here too, but no luck so far. The first plants drowned b/c i planted them in a wet spot and the second batch was consumed by some hungry dux.

My experience is that with one drake on three ducks there are very few issues, everything below is just bad. (I need 15 more ducks, but first have to expand the duck-house, somehow)
