Beautiful birds. I love the pictures. I know nothing about the exotic ducks, geese, or swans, but if you have a mosquito problem, there are birds that get rid of them. I think its the guineas, but it could be muscovies or/and geese. I live in a wooded area in Michigan (mosquito central) and have few mosquitos or flies since I've been letting my birds free range during the day. It may be worthwhile for you to try.

Max Production, Can you please show us some pics of YOUR magellans enclosure ? Danielle, Maybe you just share some recent pics of YOUR magellans in YOUR pen or pens, but if you also like you can include photos of YOUR ruddy or YOUR Ashyheads pens as well too .Also For Danny. Do you keep only the one pair of magellans as I do now? How many ashyheads and how many ruddy heads do you keep now? I ask this because of one of the great photos you posted. The one of the young mergansers to be exact. They appear to be Ians own birds from feathersite. Are you misrepresenting yourself or am I missing something here totally? Either way now who would'nt like to see pics of YOUR pens now ???!!! How about you now Roger? Heck! Who am I kidding? We all would now !

I love photos! Especially pen and avairy photos! Yours,Ians, Roger's, or whoevers! Anyway as most of you all already know avary, enclosure, and pen pics really really show others how we keep our birds and we might all learn something new to do from pen photos. Ive been in it almost as long as " Danny"says and Im still learning. She (or he)might show me how to improve my pen building skills !(which suck BTW)

Anyway dont apoligize for those photos" Max Production". We can all see they are very clear photos and SOMEONE has some very pretty birds. .

Take it easy Destin Duck, don't get so excited you hurt yourself! The picture of the young hooded was taken by Ian at my place years ago. He was kind enough to send me a disk (yes, that's how old my computer is). I should have given him credit for that picture!

Anyways, I signed up for this forum to help some of the new kids coming up. I don't need to defend myself so please don't bother trying.

Dylan, when it comes to the harder to keep/breed ducks (also usually more expensive) here are some pointers:
  • Less is more. Don't crowd them and don't keep them in with bossy larger ducks (mallards, pintails, black duck etc.). I think we all have an urge to buy more ducks but resist the urge!
  • Make the most precious/highest breeding priority bird in the enclosure the biggest or at least the same size as the biggest. Smaller ducks can have a tough go of it with larger species for food and nest sites. This is especially true for non-dabblers.
  • Water quality is a big issue. Make sure the pond has some sort of constant water flow (it doesn't need to be more than a trickle) or an aerator of some sort to keep a surface film from building up.
  • They need a good diet. Layer pellets won't cut it long-term for smew, hooded or goldeneye. There are options like trout chow, sea duck pellets from Mazuri, or even dry dog food.
  • Keep the enclosure clean. If there's mud, put sand or smooth rocks over it (mud harbors lots of bacteria, parasites and avian tuberculosis). Rinse the poop off the rocks often.
  • Keep the feeders clean. Feed in clean bowls, pick up spilled feed and keep feed dry. My suggestion is feed only what the ducks can eat in a day or even a half-day. I don't like seeing feed in the bowls in the morning because it shows they are overfed.
  • Don't bother them when it's hot or they are molting. This is a high-stress time for them and it's the time they're more likely to succumb to stress-related diseases.

I hope this is helpful! Keep asking questions and read up in the waterfowl books!

That IS truly great you signed up to help some of the new kids coming up as you say .And you give good sage advise when you do as witnessed in your last post to Dylan.

The young are our future! It also would have helped for you to give Ian credit for the photo and Ian vise versa for you on feathersite by saying they were in fact your birds at your place.

However, you are getting off topic here on this thread for some us older folks here in my opinion. I mainly asked you here on my magellan thread to see pics of YOUR magellans and YOUR pens. And its no secret you know why I did! I quote myself here again in case you may have missed some or all of it , "Can you please show us some pics of YOUR Magellans enclosure? I happen to like straight and honest people and I dont really care for anyone that misrepresents themselves is all it really boils down to.Wether we care for each other or not.

You made it out to all of us here like all those pics were your recent pics no matter who's they are who you are or claim to be or done.Im pretty sure most would agree here, Anyway Can you tell us about the magellan pics now as well? Are they from years ago too? Are they yours and if they are do you keep any magellans now? Did you keep ashyheads now ?Or Ruddyheads now? These are the type questions all of us really just want to know. Also You still have havent shown any of us any pics of YOUR pens anyway . Old or recent . And thats fine too if you dont want to. But at least try and stay more on topic here. Be advised from now on Im just going to report to the forum moderators like you did to me on the other thread if you dont. Why? I dont want this thread shut down. So If you are a grown woman as you claim to be. Act like it and go start your own thread on what you wish to discuss or show others ( both young and/or old) If its not about mainly discussing the magellans or shelgeese here. Thanks Shawn

Good luck with your Magellans Destin. They are great birds. I hope you are more successful raising them than last year and if you lose any goslings please consider having them tested for west nile virus and plasmodium.

Danny
