My neigbors Dachshunds killed 3 of my young chickens today

I'm so glad to read the responses to this post! I just caught our neighbor's dogs in our coop, may have killed one-we can't find her. I, according to DH, am a hothead. I just called the dog warden and then went to the filthy trailor where these dogs live and told the owner that I will shoot his dogs if they are at our house again. I had to chuckle when I read about "SSS" because that's exactly what was going through my mind!

I am so sorry about your birds.

I just went through the same thing this morning but I had a better outcome.

I have a dog myself but I would never allow him to run free. He is a poodle terrier mix and even though he is only 9 pounds he is a small animal killing machine. He can't help it. It is my responsibility to see he never gets close to my chickens or anyone elses small animal. It's all about being a good pet owner.

I know! We have a Jack Russell and a Golden Retreiver. Both are killing machines by nature and it's our job to train them and keep them on our property! BTW, each one has killed one chicken and that's all it took to teach them that our chickens are off limits!

our winers killed every kitten, mouse, small creature they could get their mouths on. Mine are not allowed anywhere near the coop, period.

I am so sorry you have experienced this. I have two dachshunds and they are as different from each other as if they were different breeds. My elderly doxie never saw chickens before I got mine, and he has killed 3 of them all through MY mistakes. He is a little "nonsense" dog and I love him but he made me SO angry when he killed my other beloved pets. I have to keep a very vigilant eye on him ALL the time he's in the yard.

Luckily, the rooster has kicked his butt and the Cayuga drake got him good, too, so now he knows. But I still don't trust him.

One of my chickens got over the fence into my best neighbor's yard, where they keep an old Golden Retriever and a young Rottweiler. The retriever, a bird dog, chased her, and the rottie caught her and killed her. My neighbors were MORTIFIED and really, really apologetic. They buy eggs from me, too, and talked to me through the fence all the time about the different chickens, their names, etc. The lady of the house wrote me a very apologetic note, and I called her to tell her it was NOT their dogs' fault - MY chicken got in THEIR yard. They couldn't help it.

Just sharing that story for comparison - somebody whose fault it WASN'T was apologetic and your neighbor was at fault and not apologetic.

Bill him. Report the incident to the police to get a police report (have it on record). He may have been in shock, but that's no excuse for not blurting out "Oh my god, I'm sorry!" at least once during your encounter while he was trying to retrieve his "nonsense" dogs!

Sorry about your loss; I can relate. My neighbor's Dachshunds killed at least one, and possibly 2 more, of my chickens the past couple weeks, when I let them out to roam in my yard. Some of the other hens show physical signs of attack and/or behavior of hiding in fear. The animal control officer is going to track down the dog owners and have a chat with them.

I hav etwo Dachshunds and they somehow KNOW to not bother my chickens. As a breed they are gamey little buggers - this does not make what happened to you right or justified - it is horrible - and i am sorry- There are jsut some dogs that are like that and will be gamey with chickens - squirrels -etc. Those dogs were not playing - they were bred to go to ground to get badger - they are little but nothing to mess with ....so sorry about your loss - please know there are Doxies out there that wouldnt kill your chickens! So sorry

my neighbor came over and said his dog wouldn't come to him and had run into some brush. He said he was surprised they had killed the chickens because they had never seen chickens before and that they were probably just playing with them

If they have never seen chickens before, how would he KNOW what they would do? And since when is it okay for ones dogs to "play" (uninvited) with someone else's animals on that someone else's property? He has the RESPONSIBILITY to keep his animals on his own property, and to prevent them from harming others property or animals. And if that somehow fails, to readily provide whatever restitution is appropriate, along with abject apologies.

Wow it's crazy how many people went through this. I suffered through it 3 times over the past year with the same neighbor's pit bulls. Each time I called the police and animal control, and each time they did NOTHING. The person from animal control actually had enough nerve to say that since he regained posession of his dogs there was nothing she could do and that if we encountered them on our property attacking our pets again we were supposed to catch them and bring them to the humane society so that way he'd have to pay a small fine next tiime to get them back. I have discovered that, like my dead chickens, dogs are just considered "property" here in San Diego county which gives me the right to kill them if need be. Needless to say, I now own a shotgun, have put up cedar fencing around my entire pen, and have motion sensors outside of the pen. All because of some lying, irresponsible neighbor who doesn't give a crap about his dogs anyways (I told him I will kill them next time this happens and he said "that's ok, I understand"). Typical american a-hole.

What an a-hole. I agree with all of the above posters. It's not the dogs that pssd me off (although the fact that they turned to bite you I think is a MAJOR problem!!!) Had one actually bit you, I would sue and demand the dogs be taken care of. I have a rat terrier who has hunting instinct big time. Squirrels, loose cats, rats, etc beware...but she would never touch my ducks because she knows they are mine and therefore are off limits. Apparently this guy is just a horrible dog owner, that they refused to come to him when called just shows they don't respect him and need some discipline. While I know my dog would never do something like that, IF she had, I would offer to compensate and apologize to the point you'd be sick of me apologizing. I know how it is, my ducks were attacked my a loose dog not too long ago and no one seems to know whose dog it was. While I am a big time dog lover and understand they have instincts, I would probably have been arrested for assault if I knew who the owner was.

So sorry for your loss. I hope he comes to his senses and realizes what a douche he is...
