Yes, do let us know.. He really deserves more than he will most likely get!! I hope I am wrong though.. Good luck to you and your chickens!

Thank you. I think he's just going to get fined.

Each State has its own "theft" laws. Whether it is "theft" or "appropriation of lost property" is defined by how the law is written. Although, it may (or may not be) "theft", it may be "appropriation of lost property." Speak with the local law enforcement. Ask for a copy of the report, it's public record and should be available to the victim of a crime. Ask to speak with the "watch commander" or "sergeant" or whomever leads the division. Ask them what they can or will do. Entreat them to file with the D.A. In the meantime, protect your flock, photograph each bird for identification purposes, and build a run for them. Continue to build a positive rapport with your other neighbors.

It may help for you to know why your hateful neighbor did this. Knowing the "why" will help you to protect your chickens. It doesn't mean you have to accept the reason, but knowledge is power, especially for protecting your house and loved ones.

I hope this turns out well for you.

Thank You. I plan on doing as much as I can in the morning. I want a restraing order. Quick note-when we bought the house, it turned out he was encrotched 200 feet by 7 feet on my property-this started the whole thing, we left it alone, he kept ripping out my markers that I paid 2000.00 for, we moved the fence over. He couldn't handle it.

Aloha,

Wow! I feel so sorry for you I can't believe they could do such a thing without talking to you. Take a deep breath and do one thing at a time. I wish I was in your area to help you but at least I can give you moral support on this site. The advice I have for you is, what can you accomplish right now/next day. From what I skimmed through after your initial post is that you were going to report it to the police. They can usually give you information to a ASPCA group in your area. Also have picture documentation of any injuries that your birds suffer. In addition to the written conversation that occurred during the return of birds. Basically things leading up to the event and any residual action from the other party. I do not know the ramification of the situation but call your local animal shelter for referrals.

Don't get me wrong everyone forgets, now and then, to put their birds back into the coop. I have had that problem, especially when I am on a one track mind set. I have also been late to pen my birds so I had to search in trees at night too. I hope I am not taking sides or being one sided. But at least your birds were in a coop and they didn't freeze in the snow. But the act of the neighbor was really not necessary. But there has to be a reason she was upset? I do not know what transpired between the two parties but hope it wasn't too serious. Good luck with everything and be strong.

Thank you for the advice. I wasn't home when they wound up there, still don't know how that happened.

No problem it is odd. But have you thought about talking to them about it? It could have been a misunderstanding on their part or something. Sometimes talking about it will lead to the reasons. But that is up to you to do, if you are up to it.
