My Neighbors Little Dog Is A Threat?!

I have a Jack Russel\Chihuahua mix street dog rescued from Puerto Rico that hangs out with the chickens. The biggest threat she is is she competes for the treats, even the over grown pole beans that I shuck and throw at them in the yard! She and one of the BSL's were having a stand-off well one peck n the snout and the pup was out of there! So there are exceptions to the ankle biters being aggressive.

Last week there were TWO roaming dogs chasing our chicks from one side of the pen to the other...Luckily my daughter came home just at that time and after running inside to alert me, we were able to chase the dogs off. (the dogs thought it was all part of the game, and were trying to play with us as we were yelling and shooing them away!) I would really hate to kill the roaming dogs...I love dogs,too....but, I just can't have them getting to my chickens. I am going to try a pellet gun first, hoping a few pops to the butt might scare them off. We are in the country, so won't have any problems with firing off the gun. If the pellets don't keep them away, I will resort to firmer measures.

Of course there is. But that is your dog, not your neighbours dog.

I have two small dogs (Corgi mix and a miniature poodle) and both adore the chickens.

I had to hold my corgi mix on my lap last night, because a sizzle chick (6 weeks) was attacking him. Felt bad for my little man :p

I've had about 20 dog attacks, I first started with shooing them away, when they came back I shot them with rock salt. They always came back even after being shot at. SSS was the only thing that worked.

I think little dogs are the worst, they can get into the coop though the chicken door.

The worst dog attack that my daughter ever had was a neighbor's chihuaha..she killed about 10 birds before they could get her out of their yard.

schnauzers are working dogs. So are yorkies - yorkies are terriers and meant to go into small places and take out pests. Even the laziest "non-hunting" dog can easily kill a chicken. An overly-excited pup is one of the worst since they don't realize that those fun squeaky toys will break so easily.

Tell your neighbor what happened and ask her to keep the dog at home. If she is a responsible person, she will do that.
-have a yorkie and won't let it near our chickens. He is a sweet family pet, but would immediately seize and kill a chicken without hesitation. I keep him indoors when the chickens are ranging, and let him out when they are in the coop. He's ALWAYS inside the fenced yard.

-so sorry that you lost a chicken.... Your neighbor should definitely keep his/her dog at HOME and properly confined to a fenced lawn. You have every right to range your chickens on your property without fear of another's pet tresspassing.

I'm so sorry for your loss! It seems like there is no end to the hazards for chickens. I lost 5 to a possum last week, and I've had a hawk dive-bomb my chickens, and now I find out that neighborhood dogs are a potential threat, too? Wow. I'm only two months into chicken-raising. I never knew it was so wild out there in my own back yard!

I thank you for all of the support. me and my folks have discussed these comments, and we have decided that the next time that Gus*the dog* comes onto our turf, we are going to kill him. I don't want to take the time to put that mutt in the pound, I'll just end his life then and there, either with a bow and arrow, with a gun, or with my bare hands, I will avenge one of my best laying hens, and all of you are right, that dog should stay on it's own yard, but it was my stupidity to not watch them, and if I had been out there, she would still be with me today.... it makes me go

Thank You all so much!

Sorry for your loss. What did your neighbor say when you told them their dog killed your pet?

I have a neighbor who lets his dog out to roam the hood. I have 8 18-20 week old chickens. 2 days ago I saw the dog in the yard when my girls were out. She (the dog) made no move for my girls, but I would not trust her. She is a large dog, unsure of the breed. My girls have no fear and wanted to go over to where the dog was. They ran to appox 15 ft from the dog and she walked off. Crazy girls.
