My New Barn

Quote:
We do have bears nearby, and have had them on the property. But, it would take a lot more than a high window to keep a bear out so I don't think that is the idea. I think they are thinking more like a skylight up out of the way of the birds, and I want them down low for ventilation on hot days.

At least that's my guess...

Look at what I found when I got out to the pasture this evening...

We have a single pitch roof so all the melting snow and rain will run off the back, away from all the doors and windows.

I'm going to leave a wide gravel swath across the back so I can run the 6-wheeler around there without making a muddy mess. Plus all the gravel will aid in runoff soaking in that much quicker.

The wonderful man who is making all this happen, and who tirelessly builds me feeders, water heaters, brooders and pens, without so much as a grumble. He is really pleased with how the progress is coming and we are both very glad we opted for nice big windows.

All the supports are still in place but you can see the floor drain so I can hose it out a couple times a year, this will have a basket like the kitchen sink strainer to keep debris out of the drain lines, and it will be covered except for when I'm hosing it down and I'll shovel all the shavings out BEFORE I lift the lid

You can also see the window that will be above my sink. The days of hauling water are nearly over

These are the doors that will be set in the big opening we will use to bring the 6-wheeler in to haul out all the dirty litter (The new compost bins are working like a dream!)

This is what I see when I look up. No roof sheeting yet, but the joists are all in place. It's beginning to feel like a barn

The view from the window above the sink barely lets me see the house. I like the trees but will still be pruning this one on the left as I want to be able to see the barn from the house.

I ordered 3 automatic popdoors from www.automaticchickencoopdoor.com that should be shipping tomorrow. We are planning to install them between the studs below the windows. Most of the time the entire flock will be free ranging, in which case one door would suffice. But I plan on having interior and exterior pens to contain the flock that lays my eating eggs to keep them separate from my Icelandics while I'm collecting eggs for incubation. And the turkeys will have their own pen, just in case I need to contain them on their own. This way I have enough doors to accommodate any arrangement I need to make.

The plumber came out tonight and we walked through where the gas and water lines will be run and where all the connections will be made. We are running gas and electric to the existing shed and then to the new barn. As long as we're doing it, we might as well do it all at once. There will be trenches all over the yard

but next summer I'll have plenty of time to work on repairing all the damage the construction is causing since my chicken chores won't take nearly as much time.
