My New Duck Pen

Scott,

I am in the middle of finishing my duck house (tomorrow hopefully

) and had to run inside to look at your "pool" area.

Do you have any support for underneath the mortar pan? I imagine it will be pretty heavy when full of water. I'm just trying to come up with a similiar set up within the run - which already has the wire floor completed. I guess I'll put some PT 2x4s down on top of the wire floor as a base and then build a frame for the mortar pan to sit inside which won't interefere with the drain set up.

I went to Lowes today to get the drain set up and those poor people were stumped! (I don't know why, it's not that complicated!) I'll be going to a plumber supply place tomorrow, THEY should be able to help me

Sianara,

The mortar tub sits within a pressure treated 2x4 frame. The lip of the tub is actually sitting on the 2x4s. Attached to this frame is a galvanized steel strap (used for hanging pipes) that goes across the bottom of the tub. This provides support to the actual tub from below.

The drain is fairly easy. I use a sink drain. You can find all kind of adapters that connect to the drain. From that you can connect, pvc pipe or garden hose. Just depends on the adapter you use. Just look under your kitchen or bathroom sink, then rig up something similar.

Good luck with finishing your duck house. I was hoping to get mine done this weekend, but it is going to have to wait until sometime this week. I'll post photos here and on my web site when it is done.

Ahhh, the steel strapping supports it! I knew there had to be some bottom support otherwise, when full it would fall out

My pen has a smaller pool and it's one of those tuff cattle/horse waterers i got it at Tractor supply.
These can take alot of abuse and they are not as flimsy as the cat pans or rubbermade containers but those type are excellent for just sitting on the wire bottom.

The type i'm useing doesn't require any support and has holes already in the sides where you can attach it to the 2x4s you can see it here.

This fall is turning into a wet soggy one i hope it breaks so i can get back to my construction.

Well, I got the actual house section of the pen completed today. I simply need to add the roof and frame out a small exterior access door. I'll post new photos some time this week. Incidentally, I've got a pair of mandarins arriving this week. They will go in this pen with the call ducks until I can get a proper aviary built.

We have been having so much rain and when it's not raining i'm trying to get things done i couldn't do when it was raining.
Wish the weather would break and it stay dry for more than 2 days a week.
I may have to work in the rain just to get mine finished
