I don't know where you can get just a few turkey poults, it all depends on where you are located at, which isn't a good thing to get too detailed about on the internet for most kids. I don't even get too specific and I'm full grown! (see, I say what county I live in, but don't usually say exactly where)

You could ask in feed stores, look in the classifieds of a local paper, or maybe you could find someone to share an order... or google this... "poultry for sale" + Ohio use the quotation marks, and the plus sign, and whatever state you live in, I just put Ohio in as an example.

Thank you very much. My ag teacher just gave me two adult toms that are very tame. They come when called with a turkey call and like to be hand fed. I'm gonna pick them up Saturday.Btw I love BYC. I have been using the site for 5 months now to get info on raising my seven chicks. So far they are all healthy and are starting to develop combs and wattles. If I post pictures of my turkeys do you think you can sorta figure out there breed?

Our feed store, Orscheln, has tons of birds this time of year, sold by the piece. They have 3 or 4 breeds of ducks and 3 or 4 breeds of turkeys as well as 8-12 breeds of chickens at any given time...this rotates with new shipments coming in each day.

Wish I could have a Tom, but it's not in the ordinance, and I doubt if my neighbors would overlook that guy! Beautiful, though!

This post is the reason why we picked up 2 poults from TSC. We have a lot of red tail hawks in our area. I hope it works.

I'm so glad some of you out there are going to try this method of hawk deterrence. It truly has worked for me. Victor was given to me by a dear friend, so he was already very friendly. I have read that alot of people that have raised a poult as a pet have been very pleased with the outcome. I feel very lucky to have him as a pet as well as a great asset to all my girls. Good luck to all that try a turkey...

chickensioux, do you think a turkey like Victor's size would keep away a small dog? My husbands uncle has a small dog and they live on the other side of a 4 acre field above our house. We only see her when she's in heat but she's a real problem. My hound mix wouldn't bother a tom (he's been face to face with the wild ones and was scared witless). Do you think an adult tom or even a hen would face off with a small dog (she's abt 20-25 pounds and much shorter than Victor). I'd like to free range my girls for a couple hours a day but don't want to deal with this mutt.

Hey CTChickenmom-I don't know what others would do, I suppose it would depend on how they were raised. Victors 1st year was with my friend and he was not exposed to dogs too much. Since he has been with me, he is seperated from my dogs by the chainlink fence and I don't think he would allow them up there in HIS area. I have a Doberman, Aus. Shep., and 2 mutts. Victor gets very aggresive when they hang around the fence too long and lunges at them. I think he would even give the Dobe a run for her money if I let her in with him. If you get an adult, I would keep the dogs away from him so he won't like them when they are near. Hope this helps.
