I ordered chicks from them and later found out that I had to cancel my order due to a city ordinance which limits the number of hens that I am allowed to have (I already own 4). I attempted to cancel my order within their stated "14 days" before shipping date, but they refused to refund my money. Their real policy is that you have to cancel before midnight the 15th day prior. I have disputed the charges with my bank, who checked order dates and my invoice and has decided that they will seek the money back from My Pet Chicken.
I was surprised at the verbage that My Pet Chicken used when I canceled my order. Keep in mind that the eggs have not yet hatched the chicks, the eggs were laid prior to my order and I was within their cancellation guidelines. First they said that they would "donate" the chicks and not refund my money. I asked for a receipt for my taxes or I'd report them. Then they changed their verbage from "donate" to "abandon" as per this excerpt from their email to me below:
"Thanks for contacting My Pet Chicken again with your complaint. We will identify a rescue farm to take your birds. A rescue farm can be anything from a feed store who will agree to care for and adopt out your abandoned chicks, an individual person who will agree to adopt your babies, and sometimes a non-profit rescue farm. We won't know who they will go to until we are able to scramble to find your abandoned birds a new home."
and then:
"Past a certain point, the order simply can't be cancelled, because we can't put them on a shelf in a dusty back room to be adopted in a few weeks when we can find someone to purchase them, like we could if they were books. They are living creatures, and must have a home to go to when they hatch."
We are sorry you have decided not to adopt the babies that will be hatching for you on Sept 27, and we will do our best to locate a rescuer."
They changed their ship date and hatch date AFTER I placed my order and voided my chance to cancel. When I confronted them with that, they made up an addition to their disclosure that they really require 15 days, not 14.
So, I'm not saying don't order - just proceed with EXTREME caution because I have found their practices to be less than honest, and then when they are backed into a corner, they really attempt to make you feel guilty about canceling.
