My Polish Hen Has Head Lice!

Thank you. I'll have to check the feed store next time out that way. Or google when the head is onto it...not today though.

Do you know if the spray you use is irritating to the bald spot like Hattie has? I can't use fooey on an 'ouchie'. I do use coconut oil with tea tree oil applied over it...pups don't like the smell. I haven't looked into it that combo with a chick yet.

I don't think I would use tea tree oil on something so red and sore as Hattie. I know what it feels like myself on sore hands so that would be a no no for me. I've not used my anti peck on the redness when it's been sore. I've always seperated the bird for recovery then used the anti peck when they have gone back in as a deterrent. I think blue kote would be the way to go for Hattie if she cant be seperated :D

Never tea tree oil alone. It stings! I always put coconut oil on first then tea tree oil on over that. Just a very little bit...the coconut oil acts as a bit of diluter/carrier for the tea tree, but doesn't take away from the scent or goodness of the tea tree. Plus coconut is itself an awesome healing agent too. I've used it on myself & my pups. It's like everything...use judgement for type of wound, how open, etc.

If you can't actually see any lice (lice live on the bird) in the crest I think Hattie is being feather pecked by your other birds. When polish are in a mixed flock this can happen due to their fancy crests. Other birds find their crests very fascinating and feel the need to investigate it. As they pluck the feathers and the head becomes more red as Hatties has done this inturn causes more pecking. I've had this happen within my flock of polish. I would advise you to seperate her from the other birds and give her chance to recover and grow some feathers back.

she has started itching like crazy. i don't see any other chickens ever pecking on her. i have a very tame flock. i might try isolation though...just to see what happens!

Think it's a spray and yes this can help deter the pecking behaivour. Once an area is red or bleeding this can send this birds into a pecking frenzy, as lovely as chickens are once they see blood they can become canibals. I also use an anti peck poultry spray on some of my polish that smells absolutely rancid

I've not tasted it personally but it seems to keep some of the pecking at bay!!
