Captain still has a lump under his eye/on his beak. He is breathing fine. He is eating and drinking (even though his beak won't close all the way). We started Tylan 50 injections three days ago. Giving him 1/2 cc (he is 6 months old) under the skin. Cleaning his mouth and eye with Rx. No change. He is quarantined in the chicken tractor. He gets out in the afternoon and walks around like nothing is wrong. Do I keep giving the 1/2 cc Tylan? How long before I should notice it working? Do we lance it? BLECH!

And I CAN'T PUT HIM DOWN YET. He is my baby, and I want to try everything before I give up. My heart hurts.

Can you get him to the vet????

That was my first thought. Tylan injectable should only be given for 3 days. Apparently, it isn't working. He needs a stronger antibiotic. Any other symptoms? Smell, discharges? What do his droppings look like?

Wow. That is so terrible looking. I'm a little shocked. Try and find a vet to help him.

No smell. Droppings look fine. It is the oddest thing. He isn't breathing odd. I just moved here last year. No idea how to find a chicken vet. Anyone have ideas?

Look online for poultry vets in your area. I found mine through the state poultry lab. You might even be able to call a local vet and ask if they see chickens or know someone who does. Good luck.

If it were a simple respiratory thing, I am almost positive that the Tylan would have worked.

I am pretty sure that Tylan can be given under the skin (Subq), in the breast muscle (IM) or orally. With injecting, you use .5mls per large fowl (LF) chickens and .25 for bantam for 3 days. Orally, you use the same dose, on bread, or just with an eye dropper and using the same dosage for 5 days.

I'm not totally sure on the subq injections. However, he should be doing much better by now. Keep an eye on where you injected him, Tylan can cause absesses to form when given subq or IM. I prefer to dose orally for that reason. I think you have done all you could and now you need help. I just don't know what other advice I could give. Warm compresses to the area? Using epsom salts.

Good luck. Please post updates!

Tylan is an IM injection not a Subq injection. Most likely the bird didn't even get the benefits of the Tylan. You want to inject the Tylan right into the breast muscle but not so deep you hit organs. I would give a 5 day run of the Tylan, 0.5cc, IM. And I'm sure you'll see a difference. Good Luck!!!!!

Make sure to change Injection sites, and make sure to aspirate the syringe plunger before giving Tylan to make sure you're not in a vessel (very important). If you draw up blood, discard and start over.

You can use Tylan subq, I've done it. It worked. Injectable Tylan should only be used for 3 days per instructions.

You can also just give it into the water and feed as well. I guess everyone has a different way they want to administer it. I go IM
just to get the Med right into the bird at a faster absorption rate. You're not going to cause any harm by going out to 5 days. From all the write up on the net 3-5 days is the norm. The most important thing about AB's is to avoid is to stop an AB to soon.
