My power went out this morning

I agree with you on all counts. The weak one looked weak last night and there was another one that was weak as well that pulled through. Sometimes you just have to do what you can and let nature take it's course. I think putting the blankets on the bators made a difference and putting the brooder in front of the fireplace was the best thing and only thing I could have done at the time. My brooder in the garage is almost warm enough now to put them back in it.

We only got an inch or so but it froze to ice very quickly. Hopefully it isn't too bad for you.

Our forecast is saying up to 6 inches - our high on Monday is going to be 8. Today's high is going to be 50 - so we're getting ready for it, I need to send the kids outside to play cause they won't be able to go out for a couple of days... or not without bundling up so much they can' tMOVE.

I hate that! My kids are going stir crazy from being cooped up here with me for the last week or so.

As expensive as this is, I don't think I'd go for it unless I lived way off the grid, but it is an interesting set up.

Lehman's IS a fantastic place though.

( Hey Deerman, did you ever go back and find out what kind of chickens those were at that farm where you got those eggs? How are the chicks doing? Can you tell what they are yet? )

That's a pretty cool setup. I think mine will be ok and I'm going to get the generator back from my dad next week just in case. It would be especially handy to have for the brooder to keep power where I'm brooding in the winter now.

Yep, mixed heavy breeds. sold all the chicks local at 4 weeks old.

I have a redwood, tabletop, kerosene incubator made by Buckeye in the 1920's. I've never run it on kerosene but want to convert it to electric.

I was trying to think of a simple battery backup scheme that anybody could pull off. I think the easiest would be to buy a power inverter that will plug into your car's cigarette lighter or power receptacle:

Plug this into your car and run a 100' extension cord into the house. Run car as necessary to keep the battery charged.

I did that for my laptop, but it only last for a 1/2 hour. Have a larger inverter that hook to a car battery, just in case it happen again.
