Your hen may well be one of the many single combed, yellow legged breeds that comes in a buff color vs. being an orpington - or a very poor representation of the breed due to hatchery breeding sloppiness.

well my other hen both from the same local feed store has a healthy looking red comb. And like I said Lily Ann's comb was not spotted until last few days, and also she is not making loud "celebration dance and song" after laying just a soft halfhearted bellow!! I am still remaining concerned.... Yes the feed store I purchased them from is not organic and he receives his chicks from a local stock. I know alot of local farmers ARE NOT environmentally concious for a fact based on my own observations and investigations!

In fact based on my research online RIR can range from mahoganey to The Reddish tent my Hens are now. Its based on breeding yes, and genes, but she is still considered a rhode island red based on her heritage!! Just like I am considered native american Ojibwe and Lakota, even though I have paler skin and hair, as I have scandanavian descent as well. One fact her legs are yellow tent yes, and a slight bleaching effect might be due to her being a good egg layer!

Your research aside, there is no way the bird pictured is a RIR - that is not opinion, it is fact.

shes buff....but the bit of legs visible in one picture don't appear to be white(orpington), which is why I asked if it was the picture or her legs are yellowHer legs are yellow, and Rhode island reds vary in color, based on my reading. Mahoganey to the rusty color my hen is. I trust the man that owns the feed store, he has been around a long time!!

You may have bought what was sold to you as a RIR, but you did not get a RIR - not even the poorest example of a hatchery grade RIR would be the color of your bird.
