My Rhode IR is laying seems healthy but has whitish and brown spots on comb, that werent there until

Quote: Mahogany is a deep reddish brown, and reddish tint would still be a red color. I have 2 that are a deeper reddish brown in my batch, you can see them in the pic. I had a RIR cockerel, and he was DARK like my girls. I don't want to argue with you because it's not worth arguing over, you'll believe what you want to, but people are trying to help.

In fact the pictures I have provided are very poor color quality, and are not showing the representation of color well, however I agree she is less Rusty in color than The other Hen I own, Savannah. She has light colored underplumage and is molting a bit. I must say she started laying right away, alot of people who I have read about their hens on BYC claim they had purchased their hens from a high ened stock and no eggs for two years etc. My hens are excellent layers, so reguardless of color I am very proud of my girls!! I am also not hen racist lol!

Quote: Hen racist? *snorts* that's a new one to me. I love all my hens. Isn't it amazing to watch them grow and change? Mine all started off as furry fuzzy little ones and have grown so much in the time I've had them. It's been amazing to watch their personalities grow and change over time!

It looks like she has fowl pox a virus spread by mosquitoes during warm weather. Don't disturb the scabs since it can spread the virus, but some put a little iodine on them to dry them up. If any are very close to the eyes, you may want to treat the eyes with Terramycin Eye ointment twice daily to help prevent a bacterial infection. It lasts 2-3 weeks. Here are some links to read:

Where on BYC is it you are reading about people not getting eggs for two years?

I will have to research and copy and repost. It might have been another chicken forum too. But yes some people had chickens that didnt molt and lay for two years, and they said they bought them from a high end hatchery, perhaps it was a review I read about a paticular hatchery. Do you have any suggestions of places to get chicks that are considered the best?

Your research aside, there is no way the bird pictured is a RIR - that is not opinion, it is fact.

x2 I guess we could go way back to the beginning and say they are all jungle fowl because it is my understanding thats where they all came from .
