My rooster attacked a hawk!

Where does the barring come from in your Delaware x Red Leghorn? The Delaware?

I got the breeding wrong on that. The lady I got him from said it was a Dutch brown leghorn but I don't think the barring would come from that either. I never gave it a thought till you brought it up. Hummmm.... anybody got a guess.

You peaked my interest so I looked up Delawares. They carry barring allele.

My primary hawk repellents for free-ranging front porch flock during production season. Dog also protects free-ranging dominques in pasture.

Rooster (Eduardo) that does bulk hawk repelling. He will meet hawk halfway. He defends juveniles after weaned by hen. He squawks and growls.

Hen defends chicks until they are weaned. Her squawks bring in rooster.

Big gun when it comes to battling hawks. Scoob will chase Coopers and Red-tails when chickens start squawking. I think he would kill even red-tail if it held its ground too long over a chicken carcass.

My border collie, Diamond, does the same thing. We haven't lost any to birds of prey yet.. but she barks and growls up a storm whenever any hang around too long. I think if one did come within range, she would try to kill it.

My young araucana roo tried to face off a hawk last weekend. He saved all the hens - but he didn't make it. It was a small hawk. So if Casper had been older and bigger, he might have survived. He had just started crowing the week before it happened. I never wanted roosters before either - but now I do. So glad your roo did so well.

Sorry to hear about your loss. There has never been a hawk sighting around here until it hit way too close to home. It actually tried to carry one of the babies (chooks, that is) away. The guard dog was cowering in a garden with the big girls.

Brave roo! The most my roo ever did was pull out a few feathers from a pigeon when it got too close not that it was much of a threat though!!
Give him some treats!! And a hug!! And maybe bring him inside so he can watch some TV!!!
