My shipped roo :( **He didn't make it**

Just tube fed my little buddy. Hes not happy about it but he seems to take it pretty well. I think I can get him to sit on a perch (with a little supervision). Maybe that will help his balance. I'm treating him like a stroke patient. Maybe, just maybe I can teach him to walk. I have fingers crossed

What a great idea! I wonder based on your posts whether the PO shipped him in an unpressurized compartment. That might account for everything you're seeing - and everything everyone else seems to be seeing, too. And if that's the case, then there needs to be a better method of shipping, because this just isn't right.
I really hope he comes out of it - it sounds as though he's in the absolutely best place he can possibly be -

as soon as you said he walks backwards I knew he was a silkie. My friend has one and he went thru the whole bit , walking backwards , doing sommersaults, plus he had spells where he was so feverish she said he was hot to touch, and he had seizures. She put him in his crate when he did so he wouldn't get hurt thrashing around. I'm sure he was one that would have benefitted from prednisone but, she wouldn't go to vet. We all thought each day was his last one, I don't know when the turning point came but he is 3 yrs. old now. He has turned into a very good, protective roo - shows the girls where food is, lets them take food out of his mouth, etc. She did the polyvisol infant vitamins drops (NO iron), vit E, etc etc.

I am wondering if his problems stem from "shaken chickie" syndrome like they have with kids. It also causes rupture, brain damage etc. What does the seller say about it? I mean, you don't know if he was sent in this condition. Maybe he crowed in the box because he was so uncomfortable or scared. Is the seller someone you know, and trust.

My DH thinks the same thing also. I wish there was a way to file complaints against the PO. They are horrible. If you lose a ring in shipping you get treated like a king. If you lose a animal our a life in general they shrug at you. Its just not right.

I think if my hunch is right and we can get his balance back he will be ok. Till then I think he will be accompanied by a few of my 3 week old babys. He seems to like them and they don't pick on him. Maybe they can encourage walking and scratching. One can always hope.

This was my first time dealing with this seller but shes huge on here. She has kept contact with me this whole time. I bought him back in september as my birthday gift to me. I wanted to start breeding and showing silkies. I sent her a personal check In september and she gave me updates, pictures and advice. She is still in contact with me and has been guiding me on tube feeding. i dont know her personally but she comes highly reccomend and is extremely nice. We both believe he was healthy when he left. When I recieved him he had no signs of being sick. In fact he still doesnt appear to be sick at all. Just head trama. So yes I believe and trust her. I don't feel she would have hurt him or sent me a sick bird.

I do believe the plane did the harm to him. Also he is a silkie with a vaulted skull. They seem to be more susceptible to head injuries due to the nature of their skulls. I'm not a fan of the PO so I wouldn't put it past them to stick him in a dry ice cargo plane or a unpressurized cargo pit.

Why does everyone hate the PO so much? Not to be that guy but no one else even ships animals and putting an animal on a plane is an inherently dangerous act whether it be a rooster or the family dog. I get that USPS is an easy target to criticize but they do a good job overall and they're the only shipping organization that is even willing to assume the liability of shipping live animals...none of the private carriers would touch it with a ten foot stick.

They don't assume liability for animals - not chickens anyway and certainly not for plants. The best you can do is maybe get your shipping fee back. Buying insurance will not save you - you still get zilch from the PO.
