My story of Hope

I hatched some Wheaten Ameraucana chicks on 6/4. When I went to check on them I found one little chick lying in a puddle of blood just about as big as it was. It was pale and had it's beak open. I was sure it was dead until it gasped for air. I scooped it up and saw that it had a long cord that got wrapped around it's leg and pulled. I trimmed the cord and applied pressure to it's naval. I kept it under the brooder lamp to keep it warm. I obsessed all night over this chicken. I fully expected each time that I went to check that I would find it dead. To my surprise the next morning it was still hanging on. Over the next three days I forced it to take sips of water. It just sat there with it's face buried in the bedding. The next morning when I got home from work imagine my surprise to find this little chick up and at the food bowl trying to eat with the rest of the chicks. I couldn't believe it. I was so inspired by this little baby's fight to survive that I named it Hope. I plan to keep it now since I have grown so attached to it. I just hope it's a girl or my neighbors will probably hate me and I'll have to think of a new name. Here's a picture of my little miracle baby.

So glad it lived! How old is it? If it is under 5 days old then you should be able to check it's wing feathers and tell the gender. If the feathers are the same size, it is probably a boy. If they are different sizes, then it is a girl. From that pic it looks like a girl.

So far so good. I'll keep this updated.

Oh my goodness! What a fighter! I hope all goes well from here on out!

Ilovemyduckies- does your sexing by feather length really work? Even on bantams?
