I have 19 chickens and one of the black sex link I was 100% sure was a rooster (although I had ordered no cockerals). Rusty had a very large multi pointed red comb and had all the traits of being a rooster, I never even second guessed it because he was just so 'roosterly'. Today as I was sitting with them outside, Rusty started acting very agitated and pooping lots. She came back to the other ones who were sleeping under the tree trying to wake them up and rustle them back into the coop, but they didn't really seem too interested. She started making her way back to the coop, stopping every couple feet for another washroom break (at this point I thought, he must be sick with the heatwave we are having) and then all of a sudden, I see her drop an egg. She makes her way back to the coop and gets into one of the nesting boxes, which is the first time I have ever seen any of them do this. She is only 13 weeks old! I am shocked!! The egg is quite small, half size of a normal egg, but looks okay. I still have them on the growers ration and haven't switched over to the layers, or added the oyster shell yet.
What a shocker, Rusty is not a rooster at all!

Well thats a good surprise congrat's

That's soo special... and great..now you have an additional girl.... I wish I have the same situation. .. as all five chicks that we hatched this year appear to be cockerels...

Thanks everyone!

I was just a little shocked because of her age (and sex)!!! Here is a picture of her (on the left) compared to the same age and kind (Black Sex Link). My 4 black sex link all ended up looking somewhat different, but she really stood out as being a rooster with that huge comb!!
In the second picture you can see her with the watermelon (hot days lately!!) and how red and large her comb is, I just never thought she would be a hen!

No.... she looks like a hen... and all the sex links should have a big comb when they grow up a bit.... amd she has matured earlier than others.... just like humans not all mature at the same age... or she might be older when she came...

She looks like a hen to me. No stringy rooster feathers on her neck.

Is that egg green? Sex links lay brown eggs. If it is green and not something wonky with the color of the pic, that would make her an Easter Egger :)

I Firstly thought it's a green egg... but it's only from the pic...

Just a note - true black sex link link roosters will always be Barred. So long as they are properly bred sex links it is not possible to have a non-barred Rooster and also not possible to have a Barred Hen. That trait is what makes them black sex links.

She certainly looks older than the other chickens, but does look like a hen. An A-typical black sex link hen for sure, usually they look like the hen behind her black with some red in the neck/chest feathers. Did you get her from a private breeder?
