My turkeys are dumb

If I have any escapee birds I trim one wing every time I notice them getting on top of things they dont need to again / when the flight feathers grow back. You only want to clip the long feathers at the end of their wings. Theres youtube videos on either turkeys or chickens that can probably show you better.

Found this one to be very helpful for anyone else who is looking into doing it

I have to clip a wing of my Royal Palms (and other heritage breeds) about every three weeks. As much as I like the concept of heritage breeds and the birds themselves, I am planning on doing broad breasted next year to save on frustration. I only have a 1/3 of an acre lot so they are always trying to the wander the neighborhood.

Every three weeks?!? That's crazy. Generally unless the bird is molting adults only need to be clipped as often as they molt. Juvenile birds go through a series of molts that cause the clipped feathers to be dropped quicker than an adult bird's.

Yeah I generally only need to clip mine's wings twice a year. I clipped earlier this year in late spring I think. Right now I've got a few hens growing their flights back so I need to clip them again.

The birds were growing rapidly between 12-24 weeks and were on high protein feed (22%). I would expect that once full grown and on a maintainer feed I wouldn't have to clip much. The birds have already made it to the freezer so now I don't have to worry about it!
