50's here but I won't complain either, we still have some ice and snow laying around but should be all gone by end of the week..

my chickens sure are enjoying the nice change, and my ducks and goose got to take bathes yesterday without ice forming on them when they got out. AS for the mites/lice you can get a product called Epernix pour on most feed stores should have it, what you do is put it on the skin between their wings right below their necks, it will take care of internal and external parasites and there is no egg withdrawl. I have mine on a 3 times a year schedule, and yep you'll need to clean out your coop and dust or spray it down to make sure you get all the cracks and crevices I like to use sevin spray because It gets into everywhere easier, not as easy to use in the winter but I only spray in the spring and fall when I do a complete cleaning. The lost feathers could be her pecking herself or the others starting something that can get out of hand real quick so yep keep a close eye on them to be sure it's not one of the chickens doing it. so happy to hear she's doing well and hopefully this is over for good. let us know how things are going, and have a great day!!you can also order Epernix at Jeffers livestock supplies on line. I'll get the amt to use and be back. okay Epernix: large fowl 6drops
small fowl 4drops. I use a dropper but you can use a needleless syringe also

Sounds like I should do that just as a precautionary measure. Will check into it when I go tomorrow. I have been out redoing the inside of my coop. Taking down wire and enlarging the back pen so that the other 19 chickens can have a little more room. I feel bad for them but hubby thinks they are just ANIMALS and should be treated as such. NO WAY!! that is why he said that they were mine to take care of or we could get rid of over 1/2 of them and just have enough for us some eggs. Again, NO WAY. I have raised these girls since they were a day old and I got them from Estes Hatchery. I will let him eliminate some of the girls after I get these new 12 chicks I am going to get tomorrow that he knows nothing about raised and laying. THEN and only then can I think about getting rid of any. There is a woman not to far the other side of Springfield that wants to buy 4 of my girls and I can part with those but not just to kill them and put them in the freezer.
I am done complaining now .

I have been feeling guilty since with my grand daughter here from Sunday afternoons till late Tuesday and this week Thursday, I can't go out and spend hours with my girls. I used to sit out there and just talk and watch them, good way to destress. Then it seems the day after GD leaves is when hubby wants to go shopping or do this or that and I can't spend time with them. Sure hope having the new ones in the house that I don't get to attached to them and this happens again.
THANK YOU so much for all the advice and encouragement. It helps to know there is someone out there who has gone through the same thing and is willing to help me learn more about chickens. I will surely pass along any knowledge to anyone else who asks and NO question is a dumb question. THANK YOU! My chicken thanks you too

Howdy all, I too came to this thread on a suspicion of having an eggbound lady. My lady was standing in the corner for most of the day yesterday, which concerned me. I came here to see what others have done to deal with an eggbound hen. Gave her the warm bath, massaged her, some white goo came out, but no egg. Wrapped her up and cuddled a little, took her to the florida room to keep an eye on her, and she just stood there, same as before. I offered her some nibbles, no interest. Then after about 5 minutes, she walked 3 steps, and pushed out a soft shell egg. And immediately after that, she began cooing, eating, and generally being HAPPY!

Thank you for the webstie, it has helped me many times over!

Great to hear yours went so quickly, most don't. If she has just started to lay soft shelled eggs are pretty normal they will get it worked out, if not she may need extra calcium in the form of oyster shell, kefir. also canned salmon is really good for them, I usually give mine a large can of salmon once a week. then I can slip other things in like brewers yeast and garlic, probiotic powder mixed in with the salmon.

This is what I went and picked up this morning.

I did go and check my egg bound girl and she is doing great. I still have one who has a bare butt and think I have a plucker so will have to sit down there on Saturday and see just what is going on.

Thanks Miss Lydia again for all the moral support and advice. This site is really so helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to explain to me what to do.

Miss Lydia: 4 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 4 Black Australorps, and 4 Silver Laced Wyandott's.

Tricia: They had better be ALL females, LOL I ordered pullets for all 12 but guess it really wouldn't bother me if I had a male in there. I have 1 RIR rooster for the 24 hens I have so maybe the odds need improving. LOL Thanks.

Well now your going to have to keep the pictures coming since it will probably be a month or more before any of my girls start sitting. And we need our chickie fixes..

Well, these might look like the same as last night but they aren't. I took them just before I went to bed as you can see by my grand daughter sitting on her bed holding one of the chicks. I didn't get a lot of sleep last night with sleeping in the same room as Adison, she grinds her teeth, and having it so warm in there for the chicks. Can't wait to hit the sack tonight after GD goes home.

Love her to death but love the quiet at night too.

Hope everyone is doing well this morning. Checked the chicks and everyone is a live and well. Going to keep an eye on them since I am using the shelf liner as flooring. They seem to be able to grip that well so hope I don't have any leg problems. Have a great day everyone! Deb
