My wife found this in the middle of the road...poor thing! STILL ALIVE

no high winds in the area for some time...& if there were somethin' wrong with it, I think it woulda expired by now...I'm pretty sure that some kid got into the nest & took it out, & then abandoned it...I'm glad my wife has faith in my ability & compassion in order to see this bird to health...I'm up to the task...so far, it's been two hours now & it's still kickin'...

You should google how to care for it. The wet dog food is a good idea. Chopped earth worms is not a good idea. No feeding liquids as you can accidentally get them in the bird's lungs.

There is a remarkable rehab center in New Jersey called The Raptor Trust. Check out their website on what to do with birds of your age:

http://theraptortrust.org/the-birds/injured/nestlings/

When feeding the wet dog food, you may also use a drinking straw with the edge cut to make a "spoon."

The people who work there are WONDERFUL. I'm sure they would also talk with you if you emailed them. I know you're in Alaska, but perhaps they could "talk you through" the next stage of feeding this bird if it makes it past the next few days.

They grow quickly. I brought this organization a barn swallow last week that I had raised from a little older than your bird. I really should've brought it in sooner. Either way, I fed the bird every HALF HOUR with waxworms, cut in half butter worms, phoenix worms and meal worms. When I first got it, I did do the dog food method. I was told that I did a good job, but it's difficult to reintroduce them into the wild if they aren't raised with their own kind.

I know it's tough for you because you're likely so far away from a rehabber, but maybe they can help you from a distance. Good luck!

Thanks Itsy! I'm findin' lots o' info on youtube as well...seems as though house martin rescue is more common than I thought...

a friend of mine here in AK say they last 'bout 3 weeks & then keel over & die...I'm hopin' that's not the case...

hehehe no buzzards in AK, thank god! & if it were an eaglet, I'd hafta call the USFWS...& turn it over to them, or get a tribal exemption, via the TC...

Day 1: So far so good, woke to him/her still alive! Fed it's first meal today! First time was scary as I kept missin' the mouth & the food would fall to the floor...put him/her away & waited, kept openin' mouth to my voice, so I tried again, this time, not in vain! Fed him four mosquito sized servings of wet dog food...this gives me hope! Lil' buggger can put away some grub!

Thank you all for your well wishes!!! What name shall we give the lil' bird?? (make it as gender neutral as possible, as I didn't sex the bird...

My Aunt used a wooden match stick to put the food in the baby birds mouth. Smaller than a finger and the wet dog food sticks to it.

We had 3 baby Robins, and after doing some research found that you can feed them with a syringe. And you can buy a powder formula for baby birds. You can get it at the bird store.
