Aw, I'm so sorry to hear this. My thoughts are with your family. :-( It is so hard to lose them. Horses just have a tendency to sneak so deeply into your heart.
I had a very old mare that kept losing condition. I bought some bagged feed for her I found at the feed store. It had chopped hay and some grain mixed in. I forget what it was called but it was some sort of balanced complete ration made for horses. I didn't think it would help, but I gave it a try. It made a world of difference. When she died at 34 she was in fine condition and looked great. I think she had a stroke or something because when she died she just suddenly and literally dropped dead.I have an older arab mare that is becomng impossible to keep weight on. She has been my buddy for a long time. The day is coming much too soon when I will be facing euthanasia for her. She gave me a beautiful filly 7 years ago. We will both be devastated when the time comes.
My condolences to you and your husband.
Maybe her thyroid is messed up. Have you done any blood tests? (that's like my go to for everything it seems LOL!) Hope you can find an answer. My mare has hay in front of her at all times, gets a coffe can full of each (1) beet pulp sheds (2) alfalfa pellets (3) senior complete pellets , a scoop of SOURCE, 2 cups of rice bran and 2 cups of Amplify nuggets every day. She has had her teeth floated and was wormed after a fecal sample. She is currently a 2 on the body mass scale. My vet just shakes his head......
She is still willing to run and play with her filly every day. Her coat is healthy, so are her feet, her eyes are bright and she is still nosey as ever.
She just looks like she is being starved........![]()
