Mystery Horse Injuries/Illness :( UPDATED: R.I.P.

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear this. My thoughts are with your family. :-( It is so hard to lose them. Horses just have a tendency to sneak so deeply into your heart.

Thank you :hugs

It did surprise hubby; he spent years seeing me love on my own horse (have since gotten more somehow...), think of him, and generally be my four-legged man. Hubby said he didn't see the interest, how it could be fun, or, when mucking stalls and throwing hay endlessly in the snow, how it could be worth it. So I got him Trick, knowing he was big and more dominating than my horse, and sent them on a long trail ride over and over during the summer. He began having conversations with Trick, giving him extra treats, and just standing with their heads together.

At the end, he managed to tell me, "A dog spends years getting into the family place in your heart, but a horse...I was trusting him with my life on those rides and telling him everything." I mentioned, hoping he'd hear the humor, that he hardly talked on rides. And he just nodded and began petting Trick some more.

I've never seen him collapse before then, and while I'd like to get him a young horse to play with and learn with, or maybe a retired working horse, I'm afraid right now all he could do is compare it to who he lost...

But for now, I am waiting on a frame with Trick's name and braided tail end inside to give to him.

I have an older arab mare that is becomng impossible to keep weight on. She has been my buddy for a long time. The day is coming much too soon when I will be facing euthanasia for her. She gave me a beautiful filly 7 years ago. We will both be devastated when the time comes.

My condolences to you and your husband.
I had a very old mare that kept losing condition. I bought some bagged feed for her I found at the feed store. It had chopped hay and some grain mixed in. I forget what it was called but it was some sort of balanced complete ration made for horses. I didn't think it would help, but I gave it a try. It made a world of difference. When she died at 34 she was in fine condition and looked great. I think she had a stroke or something because when she died she just suddenly and literally dropped dead.

My mare has hay in front of her at all times, gets a coffe can full of each (1) beet pulp sheds (2) alfalfa pellets (3) senior complete pellets , a scoop of SOURCE, 2 cups of rice bran and 2 cups of Amplify nuggets every day. She has had her teeth floated and was wormed after a fecal sample. She is currently a 2 on the body mass scale. My vet just shakes his head......

She is still willing to run and play with her filly every day. Her coat is healthy, so are her feet, her eyes are bright and she is still nosey as ever.

She just looks like she is being starved........:(

Whenever I have one that's too thin I de-worm it with Panacur Power-Pac (5 day double dose of fenbendazole). You might want to try that. I also do this to all of them at least once a year.

Maybe her thyroid is messed up. Have you done any blood tests? (that's like my go to for everything it seems LOL!) Hope you can find an answer.

MamaDoodle, so very sorry for you and your husband's loss!! :(

What a heart breaking story.  Sorry for your loss.

Thank you both...he is doing alright now, though still talking to Trick's grave one or two times a day, which is fine. I think it's keeping him content. Maybe a weekend ride with friends on my other horses will help? :idunno
