Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I have 5 NN's that are about 6 months old. No ones crowing and I think one is laying. They are mixed with others and everyone lays in the same areas. 2 of the NN's are mixed with a bantam, I was told but not what breed. One is fully feathered, I just liked the coloring so I wasnt worried about it, one way or the other with "her". The other mix is a grey and red, I'm a bit confused as to what it is. Araucana have no tails but arent a bantam and the other has a tail. Also, biggest NN from the same clutch 4-6 inches taller than the rest, when everyone is "at attention". I dont know yet if it's a he or a she. Their father was a grand champion, HUGH bird. Red is big but doesnt crow and has a small comb no waddles to speak of but it a lot bigger than the rest. Red's not the boss either. The silkies run Red around, so do the other roosters. No ones mating with Red either. So any ideas

Dipsy, and Slips, I have a good incubator but it always has had a problem w/ shrink wrapping. It works perfectly until that last bit. I have read others hatching from it w/o this problem though. I thought I had made enough changes this time to not have the problem. I turned the temp down to 99 even, and at lock down almost entirely closed the vent and had the inside walls filled up w/ condensate. I always time hatch so that I will be here during it. It always hatches a day or so early so I thought I would be here for the hatch day, however w/ the temp turned down it caused hatch to happen on time instead of early, and I had to be gone all day, so couldn't catch the shrink wrapping before they got really weak. Almost every chick I have hatched from it I have had to "birth" from the egg, usually only one or two make it on their own. This hatch had 2 that made it on their own I got all the others out.

This morning only one is to weak to leave icu, the rest made it to the brooder, so 15 in the brooder looking spunky and fuzzy. One still in the bator, may have to euthanize not sure, giving it a little more time.

Slipswife, don't let less then 100% success stop you from hatching, this morning I have 15 more chicks then I had 2 days ago and they are from genetics I have been working on so are unique and couldn't be gotten anywhere else.

I was wanting to pick up an inexpensive incubator and turning tray from TSC to try but I'm afraid with the difficulties that come up with hatchings, even with good incubators, an inexpensive one might not be a good choice. I've been looking at them and trying to price what I feel would be a comfortable amount to spend on something I might only do once. We sold all of our roosters and only had one, a bantam, left and he injured his leg before Christmas and ended up passing away. We think he might have been trying to mate one of the bigger girls and hurt himself, he then was hobbling around, for a few weeks, and the one night we didn't go out and check on them, he didn't make it far enough in the coop and we believe he froze. So we have awhile until any of our roosters are mature enough to do anything.

I need to figure it out though because I've only noticed incubators at our local TSC during chicks days, along with a number of other items you don't think you'll need until they get larger.

That tree makes cute apples, @Nava!

What humidity are you running the first 18 days, @Kassaundra?

I ran a Little Giant Styrofoam incubator(s) (from TSC) nonstop for years until I built the chest-of-drawers incubator. The fan that came with it finally burned out last year (years and years of hatching dust build-up) and i replaced it with a computer fan. I know lots of people complain about them, but they never gave me any problems : ) @Slipswife

First chick of this weeks hatch out! A Naked Neck Fm Green-Egger : )

Probably on the low side at about 50%, I was so afraid of drowning them. I didn't think the low humidity would shrink wrap them at hatch time though, if the humidity was high at hatch. I have restocked the bator and plan on keeping the humidity higher to about 60% for the pre lock down time this time, hoping that makes a diff.

But none of them are crowing at nearly 6 months. Do NN's have a late crow or no crow? (I had a EE that started it's crow at 6 weeks.) Their dad had huge waddles and comb so did the NN hen. Not arguing just am confused by these guys. And I sure hope they arent roos... I dont need 3. :(
