Naked Neck/Turken Thread

yea i got a rooster that crows very seldom maybe once every two weeks,

i know this cause he stays in the house, he is one of our older roos and since he was young we noticed this.

Saddle feathers are a done deal for boys, no girl ever has saddle feathers, and I see them on all 3 mentioned as boys. And the feather coloring is all boy in all 3, no female of any breed or any color has those boy colors ever. Sorry.

I can see the saddle feathers now that you mention them. Not sure about the coloring thing. But if they aren't talkers that is GREAT. I have 3 other roos that are and they are LOUD! I was going to get rid of the the mutts anyway I just might keep all these boys, then. Cull the 2 mutts or sell not sure I'm attached to them. I have to remember not to name my food. ..... What do you think is with the grey's tail?

Is he cold in that pic? I haven't seen my boys hold their tails down like that. Does he always hold it that way?

It was in the 60's and he was sitting in the sun. I dont remember it up but never noticed it down until yesterday while out taking pics of Big Red.

Catch him and feel around the tail area. Is he able to move the tail? If he has the tail bump(parson's nose) then probably there was some kind of damage to his tail very early on.

If the bump is lacking or majorly reduced, could be rumpless. If rumpless is allowed to breed with tailed birds, sometimes there are birds with "partial tails" with random and few tail feathers sticking out and usually were totally immobile- at least that's my experience crossing Araucanas with NN.

BTW one of the big tells for cockerels are chicks that start out solid colored(black, blue, white etc) eventually start growing off color(either white or red/brown/straw) on the wing and back area.

Normally super pointy and shiny feathers on neck, back and wings are the first unquestionable cockerel signs, well before any roosterly behaviors. Some roosters hit puberty much earlier or later... generally bantams hit much earlier, with larger, heavier being slower. always exceptions of course. Size and color of combs, face, wattles can be used but there's can be a bit of grey area- some pullets grow big combs early, some cockerels don't really grow or redden up so early so the first pointy/shiny roo feather is a clear, strong sign.

I went thru some pics of him when he was younger it was out not up about 2 months ago. I don't have anything since then. I almost didn't recognize him. He was completely grey then.
