Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Ok, so from what I've seen/read/been told/understand on NN genetics, I'm not going to get clean neck chicks from breeding any of the chicks I've gotten from hatcheries. They've all had either bowties or bibs. I have one hen that appears to have a clean neck but I know she use to have 2 feathers on her neck that more than likely were plucked off. We have a new cockerel that looks like he's going to have a bow tie, 3 feather on each side. One hen with a huge bib and lastly a new pullet that appears to be a clean neck but I'm pretty sure she had a feather or two at some point, I'm pretty sure as a chick she had a fluffy spot...

I don't mind hatchery stock, I just really want clean necks. If I keep ordering NN from different hatcheries, will I ever get a couple? Should I order hatching eggs? I'm pretty sure from what I've read, if I remember correctly, even clean neck to clean neck will only have a % of clean necks?

NN do not sell well here. Even sexed and 8 weeks old they are slow to sell. I literally ended up making someone by a couple because they wanted so many of the EE pullets and weren't willing to take any cockerels, it was suppose to be a trio, that I told them only if they bought 2 of the NN pullets. There's one lady that bought one and came back and bought 2 more but doesn't have room for anymore. The other 2 sold because someone really wanted more pullets than what I had left of the other group so they went ahead and bought a couple. I stated in my ad their purpose and how they laid all winter for us, without extra light and that we will always have a couple of NN, still a no go.

So, all of that was to explain how much I would LOVE to breed them and buy them from everywhere and hatch eggs from all over and have a number of NN projects and go NN crazy but, I can't because no one will buy them and I will become to attached and not be able to process them and there will be so many NN's on our property they would be able to see us from space...

Do I just need to love the ones I have and get over a couple of extra feathers here and there?

Have you tried selling fertile eggs??? Many folks will buy them. I believe that I make more in fertile eggs then when I sell chicks to people in town. I would not hatch out any more. If you have enough so you would have a dozen a day or every 2 days then try selling the fertile eggs for awhile. Of course its not a yearly thing but sometimes people buy through the whole year. You never know.

Rudy is scaleless.

Here is an excerpt from the article above:
"Scaleless (sc/sc) chickens carry a single recessive mutation that causes a lack of almost all body feathers, as well as foot scales and spurs, due to a failure of skin patterning during embryogenesis. This spontaneous mutant line, first described in the 1950s, has been used extensively to explore the tissue interactions involved in ectodermal appendage formation in embryonic skin. Moreover, the trait is potentially useful in tropical agriculture due to the ability of featherless chickens to tolerate heat, which is at present a major constraint to efficient poultry meat production in hot climates. In the interests of enhancing our understanding of feather placode development, and to provide the poultry industry with a strategy to breed heat-tolerant meat-type chickens (broilers), we mapped and identified the sc mutation."

I haven't tried actually hatching our own yet. All I've done is order from hatcheries. The only rooster we have is a Cream Legbar right now. The NN cockerel is only about 6 weeks old so we have awhile before I will be able to see what we'll get.

I've never seen hatching eggs for sale in our area so it never occurred to me to offer them.

When you start getting eggs, and know they are fertile. Put some on your local craigslist, and put some on e-bay. You may be shocked. I had a lady pay me $5 a dozen for the mixed eggs (Delaware X Turken and Delaware), at that point I had my turken in with my Delaware, so I told her to update me on the chicks. I really want to see what they look like. But that is still more for a dozen then what I get for eating eggs. I have been seeing some NN hatching eggs on e-bay going for $15 + a dozen so it may be worth it. Next year I will be trying it with our pure turkens. Who knows might be able to sell a few at least. We just raise them because we love their personalities. Out of all of my hens my Turken is my favorite. Strange to because when she hatched I would have nothing to do with her. I wanted my golden comets not that. The lady sent me the wrong eggs.

We got our NN hens last year as part of a hatchery surprise. They were the only chickens we saw pictures of that we said 'if we get any of those, we'll sell them right off'. We got 2 and fell in love with them first thing. They are now in the 'we will always own' group.

I might post a listing for hatching eggs and see if anyone seems interested. I know fertility is good on their eggs. The 2 I added to the incubator are developing nicely. I almost didn't keep one, it appeared clear at candling while the others showed development. I gave it a few extra days and it was like it developed and surpassed the others overnight!

From what I've read the chicks will more than likely have bibs but I'm ok with that. I'm interested to see what color of eggs they might lay since they will have the CL blue gene. I don't know what I'll do if they are cockerels. The CL cockerel is a handsome guy and I'm pretty sure that any chick from him and our red NN will be to pretty to part with...my husband is not going to be happy...

Well my husband told me he wanted more of the NN's he even loves her, however this year I went way over board and am expecting about 200 babies from what I bought for chicks and what I am hatching out. However we bought new pens and he is adding even more coops.

I think he loves the chickens some days more as much as i do. I only added one of our NN eggs in the incubator, but I also got some from another breeder that are in there. I sure hope they hatch. Then I have 10 NN chicks coming from Cackle, and 1 cockerel, so I will have it made for NN's.

I have 2 little blue eggs in my incubator that I don't know what they came from. But they are real tiny and light blue, so I shall see if they hatch out what they came from. I love getting eggs from e-bay I never know what I will hatch out.

Thanks for the explanation on Rudy, if I by chance get one I will know what to do. Here im sure he would need special place due to extreme heat but hey I have birds it could sit with. Will be interesting watching Rudy grow up.

I know in Isreal there is a lot of genetic work going on w/ the scaleless gene. The heat wouldn't be a problem for them, that is what they are wanting to use them for, meat chickens where it is to hot or tropical for feathered chickens. The cold is a huge issue for them.

thats where the Naked Neck gene comes into play, I have seen Broilers sporting this gene in Nicaragua and they perform much better on this Hot climates.

Our original NN girls are from Cackle. When they first came in we swore they had to be bantams, even though Cackle doesn't sell bantam NN. They must have been from pullet eggs and at some point around 5 weeks old, they caught up to the other guys. We were positive one was a cockerel and one was a pullet, we were wrong!

Our new group this year is from Ideal. We only have 2 pullets left and one has a super tiny scrawny neck, its so cute! Oh, and we can't forget our Cackle 99% sure cockerel from this year. I can't wait for him to finish feathering out.

I was searching NN hatching eggs and found someone who has mottled, I believe is the correct term, NN. I fell in love...but like you, I think I have NN's covered this year and if I want more I can always hatch them.

I have found that the 2 NN eggs are the easiest to candle and we see the most movement in them. I'm really glad we added them to the group!

I can't wait to see pictures of your group!!!
