Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Ohhh my dream chicks lol. My bil has a polish maybe I can do a breed if I have been lucky and have two of each sex. Im curious if you breed NN how long would you have to breed out any cross breed and get one like Rudy? Or is he more of a rarity? Got a few years before I could even have good stock built up but I can look to future pairings. If I want a best cross what should I look for? Ive seen cornish but unless I buy babies I cant garantee healthy stock until I can get to know the people better and communicate my needs. I think polish mix would be a nice fancy here lol. Also if I cross which sex is better to work with as in I own the female or owning the male? I would also need to know with a mating how long is sperm viable as in eggs to expect from that mating? What mix gives best rate of success so far?
You will NEVER get a Rudy from naked necked, or Turken, or any other bird that does not carry the scaleless gene. Rudy has nothing to do w/ naked neck (though his parents were) but his parents carried the sc gene. The ONLY way to get a Rudy is to have a male and a female who carry the sc gene, and who both pass it on to the offspring, as it is recessive.

Na (the gene for naked necks) is passed on equally from male or female, so gender of which parent is nn does not matter at all.

wow I did not realize how much science went into the NN. I just got mine because I thought they were interesting and I wanted to know if they would lay green and blue eggs. I guess I never realized it was a gene and not just a breed. It is so cool to troll through this thread and find out all this information however it is a bit overwhelming trying to take it all in. I am also glad to know there are other people interested in seeing what they can do with the NN.
I would love some frizzle NN and some Silkie NN. It would be interesting and fun.

Good info as I said im curious plus these birds would be of huge benefit here if introduced properly. Im going to ask the local vets about any medications since I did here of bird flu here but dont remember what city. Most farmers would not pay for such things on a small scale but to start right and for future demands I hope the government does its part and setssome rregulations. On a private owner eating his own flock its one thing but animals grown for consumers I hope they have the guidelines. I hope to visit the school of agriculture and animal husbandry this year. Will have to make connections. The vet laughed when we got our rabbit shots. Not to mention our dogs and cats. As for cuties like Rudy I doubt they could test or would be interested now but maybe in the future some student might pick up the study here. I have a hard enough time finding a guy who wants to marry a girl who wants to own and study animal care.

*disclaimer* I personally, and probably incorrectly, look at it this way...

Someone explained it on here to me, I wish I could remember who, that naked neck is a breed and a trait. With that in mind, if a bird meets the breed standard for a Turken/Naked Neck, I view them as a Turken. If a bird has naked neck traits but doesn't meet the standard, I would call it a Naked Neck. I refer to all of mine as NN just because its easier and I personally don't care what mine are called.

Kind of along the same lines as referring to an offspring of an blue/green egg laying breed as an Easter Egger because they don't meet the breed standard. I also do not know what the breed standard is for a Turken, comb/feather coloring...I should look that up!

If you are breeding crosses for a specific reason, egg size or production, I would refer to them as type/type crosses so people who are interested in certain traits know what they are getting.

That is all 100% my personal view on my personal flock.

True. I guess most anything with a Naked neck is defined as a naked neck however only the 100% pure seem to be defined as the Turkens. Turkens are what we breed rather then NN's however I may give it a try later on to see what I can come out with for folks that just want pets, I know plenty of folks around this area have been just wanting anything with a naked neck. However they can not be sold as pure breed or show quality, which is what I am striving for.

Blue or green egg from a NN??? Never seen that happen before unless if it's a half breed.

I am so nervous and excited and disappointed all at the same time. Everyone warns you about chicken math but there aren't many warnings about chicken emotions!!!

I have my first set of incubated eggs in the incubator right now. They are shipped eggs and a few of our own. I'm afraid that this hatch is going to be a bust...yesterday was the official 'hatch day' at 8:30 last night. I know I've heard peeps and pecking, I know it can sometimes take longer but I'm not getting my hopes up...

All of that leads up to I have another set of eggs coming in this week from Old Orchard Farms for Turkens! I'm starting to wish I would have waited and tried a few more home eggs and had a successful hatch before ordering more eggs but of course, I got ahead of myself. I have 2 cream legbar/naked neck eggs in with the shipped eggs that were the best developers of the group and the easiest to watch their progress. I think that, along with the awesome mottled Turkens from Old Orchard Farms, is why I thought I'd be ready for more eggs...now, I don't see movement or changes in the NN eggs from my group...

I've moved on from my 'clean neck' fixation to 'just for fun' birds. Fingers crossed the chicks in the incubator cooperate and give me enough confidence to move on with the new group. Of course, they are coming if I'm ready or not!

My NN are a cross with Ameraucanas. Im sry I posted the picture a couple pages back. They are half and half

If I can get a hold of me a rooster that would pass on that trait I would gladly breed him in with my Turken, I love the green eggs. I am still praying the 3 I have in the bator hatch out. Brenda is giving me silky x with Buff Orpington babies can't wait to see that

They sound to me like they will be a funky breed. puffy and yet fuzzy at the same time
