Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I took a few quick snap shots today. I am sick and couldn't stay out very long.

This is Riker the current number 2 guy.

This is one of the "sweeties" 2 look identical

This is the boy who flew under the radar for so long, still trying to decide on boys this one Riker or Shakespear.

This is Qtip the mottled hen.

Here's a few pics of my nn boys and girl

I'm cross posting in here because I'm cross breeding my Alohas with Naked Necks!!! Please check out the "Aloha Project" thread if you'd like to see how these develop. Mille Naked Necks, anyone? LOL!!! Just hatched a bunch of new peeps (11 Aloha x Naked Necks so far) and if any of them end up spotted will be sharing on the Aloha thread: Here are the "regular" Alohas so if they color up, picture this with a NN:
Love these. I'm hoping I'll get me some of those eggs this coming spring. I have a really nice mottled hen to cross with these. Thought I had a picture of her. Can't find it though. Anyway after her milt she really got mottled. Almost looks like white flowers all over her. Plus my rooster carries mottling. They did produce this;
 MG]. It was a both rooster and hen. It died a couple three weeks ago. So I know they can produce spots.

Very beautiful, love this rooster! Really liking the color combinations of tan, black, white, darker shades of buff, red with the NN adding different area of color. If I saw this roo for sale locally,most likely would have grabbed it despite not needing more chickens lol....

Did you see the recent messages about Pyxis' mottled chick and exchequer?

Curious- do you get birds approaching exchequer? Just wondering if there's any meat behind the idea of breeding more white to achieve the exchequer pattern.
I did use Exchequer Leghorns early on in my Aloha program, to try and get the bolder "Exchequer" pattern (instead of the more moderate "mottled" pattern as seen in Speckled Sussex.) YES - the idea did work! However, breeding the *black* color out of the program was extremely hard, especially when trying to use Mottled stock from Speckled Sussex lines, as those are already dark with Mahogany.

My advice to anyone else who wants to use Exchequer to bring spots: If you're going for black and white, no problem! If you want any of the lighter colors, I would have used Buff Columbian color (it was found in this NN rooster's mom but is also found in other breeds) and/or New Hampshire Red to really focus on eliminating the black early on.

Like I'd have crossed Exchequer x NHR and then back-crossed the chicks - to maybe try and pull out the recessive reds - and try to eliminate the black right out of the gate. Because that part of the project was TOUGH!

I want to get some eggs to Draye but I'm also going to be setting up a breeder pen of these and trying to sell the extra eggs (maybe on Ebay?) this Spring. That's part of the reason I'm keeping the current NN chicks, so folks who might want to bid on eggs would see what they might get in the babies. I saw a dozen Mottled Naked Neck eggs sell last Spring on Ebay for $45 which is what gave me the idea to set up a breeder pen. (Those were from a black and white mottled flock, not Mille - have not seen Mille NN's before?)

Might be a good way to support my feed bill? Raising all these Alohas, feed costs are about $40 per week! Ugh!!! Selling a few extra dozen eggs this Spring would be a nice help if they are popular. Will probably depend on how these little babies grow out! The oldest chicks are nearing 3 weeks, and I'm already seeing some white spotting in about half the babies' new feathers. Yay!
