Naked Neck/Turken Thread

;)

They are pretty hard to find for sure. I had to wait about 30 years, after seeing them on the local news.  Then the only sources I'm aware of nearly lost their breeding stock- first to raccoons,  the second to a probable dog attack.  Man I was so worried the chance to get some had totally vanished....

But you got them at the end!
So you can imagine how hard will it be for me to find them here.

There is a guy in Maine that raises Madagascars. It gets really cold there. He said he has been raising them for 3 years now and has not lost a single bird to the cold. So I would say Naked Necks should take the cold pretty good as long as you keep them out of the wind.

Aoxa raises nn in Canada she posts pics of insane snow and cold for insane (for me a southern girl) amounts of time.

Haha, I don't name most of the birds but the first scaleless got names because they are so special.... okay, just because I love them... ;)

Precious, a little older:

Isn't she just so Precious?!

Golem(black one), Dilo (after Dilophosaurus- a double crested dino, the "spitter" in Jurassic Park. He has a double comb) and Ivar the Scaleless

Ivar, Dilo and Golem:

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the names you chose, and I really enjoy seeing this guys. They really do look a lot like their prehistoric ancestors. Absolutely fascinating!

Quote: I'd take 100+ over having a high of 50 (or 40 or 30 or even 17) any day. The chickens don't like the heat, but the last time I checked I'm the one paying their bills.

If you visit Western Washington, the best time to go is end of July or August. Eastern Washington is hotter and dryer; best time to go is May or June when the wildflowers are blooming and it isn't so dusty. It is pretty here, but you'll be glad to get back home so you can warm up.

Haha thanks!

Sometimes looking at them, I'm reminded of the Walking with Dinosaurs programmes my nephews were just so crazy about.

It is also interesting to see how their bodies actually move.. for example, wing dancing looks like most of the wing is extended downwards but with them you can see most of the action is actually just the 'hand' part with rest of the wing not moving much. It is hilarious to see!

Bet you aint never been to West Virginia, have you? At the first part of the week, we had temps in the mid 20s and that's tolerable because it finally got into the mid 40's to 50's as the days wore on. Not much better now.

Nope, sorry, West Virginia will never be on my bucket list of places to visit.

Last week it was freezing at night (25 - 30 degrees) and then 2 days later it was in the 70s. The horses and chickens have no idea how to regulate with such temperature fluctuations. I guess that is what I get for living in the mountains.

LOL...Doubt I'll be headed for the great north-west anytime soon. To keep this sorta' on topic, we have very few two-legged chicken thieves in this state either. We have the lowest crime rate in the nation and despite that it seem we have only two seasons (Spring-Winter), It's a safe bet I'll be here for a while...

By the way..there's a very good reason that our crime rate is low...almost no such thing as a home invasion but I can't talk about that here...
