Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Taking a break from breaking dozens of cookies with my son and thought I'd share some of my most recent favorite photos of my 12-week old "babies". I'm not sure there will be many more photo sessions as they're becoming increasingly resistant to be photographed, and heavy to hold on one hand as I usually do. I'll start with the boys.

This is Blaze. I've already selected him as a cull, but he's a pretty bird.

Chance - a possible cull, but I'm still watching him.

Dutch - Love his feathering, but not so much his shape. He's in the same category as Chance right now and will at least miss the first cull.

Lance - Again, love the feathering. He looks a lot like his older brother from the Fast Five flock, Zazzle, but he's smaller. He's lighter than I would prefer, but I like his muscle density and body shape. I'll probably cull him, but not right away. I want a few more weeks to observe him.

Ozzy - My favorite. He doesn't look much bigger than the others, but he weighs significantly more than all but Zazzle who weighs just one ounce more than him despite being a week older.

Pepper - My favorite personality among the boys. I'm actually looking for every possible excuse to keep this guy. He's just a little lighter than Ozzy, but more streamlined. I'm sure he carries an outstanding egg production gene and I will be looking for placement of him with my best laying birds...which means I may need to dispatch one of my older boys. Pity.

Ramses - good body shape and less feathering, but the lightest and smallest of the boys. And he constantly pecks at my hands and legs, begging for attention. Very annoying. He's a cull.

Raymond - I'm holding on to this guy for a while. Not only am I in love with his feathering, but I'm blown away by his very wide back and solid musculature despite his light weight. I suspect his father is my big NN rooster, Shiloh, who had modest growth until about 16 weeks and then suddenly bulked up like crazy. I can stand waiting a bit longer for a meat bird to peak if he's got a magnificent shape. (Admittedly this photo doesn't do him justice....but he was extremely uncooperative during the photo session. He just wanted to sit on my shoulder.)

Ruby/Rudy - A definite cull. Everything about this bird mystifies me. It's weight is smack dab in between the smallest of the other boys, and the heaviest of the girls. He shows all the markings of a cockerel, but still behaves more like a pullet. Gorgeous? Yes....but not what I'm looking for. I'll probably wait for it to start crowing before culling, just to satisfy with finality the questions in my mind about its gender.

Taz - finally! The last one. This guy caught me by surprise by having a massive growth spurt these past few weeks. Only Ozzy tops him in weight in this group, and his back, thighs and breast are nice and wide and meaty. He's with Raymond in the "wait and see" category.

Okay, and now for the girls. This won't take long. There are only two of them since I culled little Weezie.

Fezz - She just doesn't like me. I'm used to NNs being so friendly, but every time while the others come running TO me she runs away. Still, she's got decent weight and is very healthy.

Princess - the complete opposite of Fezz. She's sweet, social and confident. I'm posting two photos of her because she was very determined to snuggle on my shoulder instead of being photographed and I didn't really get a single good shot of her.

Luckily I also have the two NN girls from the Fast Five and they are not only lovely, but a full 5 ounces larger than either of these two girls....and they like me.

Beautiful birds! Ozzy and Taz remind me of Snape and Tank, respectively. I can relate to the whole resistant to photos things. I can barely even get weights now - I have to get "action shots" at this point. No way will they pose for me...

At this stage, 4 more weeks is an eternity and your 'favorite' can change a thousand times.

Since you pick up and hold the birds for photo shoots, how about tying a horse shoe knot around one leg to keep them still for the shoot. Unless you have tons of time or are just extra good at action shots like (KASS) that would help No?

BEAUTIFUL BIRDS! I have a question about trying to crow pullet. I have a buff orpington bought as a pullet who had red wattles. I posted a pic on byc and everyone said a cockerel. at 3-4 months old this chicken tried to crow 2-3 times and never again. now is 5 months old, does have pointy saddle feathers but comb and wattles are hen size and definitively no crowing. here are the pics taken a month ago. in this one saddle feathers are more visible: the wattles are a bit bigger now but the comb is the same size: any idea what this chicken is? btw my sick NN girls are doing well. one of them have 1 foot a bit swollen but this might be due to scratch wound. she lays eggs every day. my big fat one is more serious, I think she has more than one problem. but she is a fighter. her appetite increased a bit which I think is a good sign.
That's a cockerel. I primarily raise English Orpingtons, they are very slow to mature and can be difficult to sex. I occasionally have cockerels fool me into escaping freezer camp for months! Not all full grown Orpington cocks have large combs nor wattles, my Gold Laced boys all have smaller combs and wattles and are often mistaken for very large hens by visitors.

One of my naked necks got a neck wound, someone ripped the exposed skin down near the shoulder.. so I followed some earlier advice in this thread and used blue-kote on it. Pork also had some scratches, so I decided to go ahead and spray those too and.. oh my! They look like one big bruise! You'd think someone played football with the poor thing!

It's time for them all to move out to the coop. Pork will stay inside 'til spring, but I'll be happy to get their siblings out of the house at this point. They're expert mess makers.
