I have one trying to do the same thing now. Keep moving her off. Disgusting maybe I'll give her some eggs. Nice bunch of chicksSo my barred rock Tick decided she was going to gather up and sit on a massive pile of eggs directly beneath the roosting bars like the grossest mom in the universe, and when I couldn't deter her and get her to pick a new spot, I decided I might as well let her try. Especially since my incubator is busted, and I need hens so badly.. every broody is valuable right now. What does she do?? Manages to whip up a big batch of babies even in the worst spot possible. Impressive! She's got 9 out so far with 7 more hopefully on the way, including 3 I think are her sex linked sons. 4 naked necks so far!

Probably a barred rooster, likely Marshmallow's kid. The white one is SO ROUND.. and has immensely puffy cheeks.. trying so hard not to get attached because all the boys are dinner, but gosh. Lookit that grumpy face!
Two buffs... I think the drying one is homozygous NN, they're so bald I thought they might be scaleless when I first reached under Tick just from the feel. So, probably Hamster's kid! The other.. gosh. With a face that sweet, and they're a bit chunky, probably a buff orpington cross. Their mom, Burp, is one of my favorite hens so I hope that one turns out a girl!
all of them are beautiful.
Seeing all these babies are making me wish for mine to get to hatching. They're in the hatchet now, due tomorrow and Thursday. To the both of you cute orecuious babies. So my barred rock Tick decided she was going to gather up and sit on a massive pile of eggs directly beneath the roosting bars like the grossest mom in the universe, and when I couldn't deter her and get her to pick a new spot, I decided I might as well let her try. OK, so it's settled - I will have a gigolo Lavender Americana cockerel, and I will give him a breeding pen called Studio 54. I can hear the boom-chicka boom music now...![]()
They are lovely! That bare backed little black girl looks like one of my girls right now. Poor thing is quite the favorite...
Quote: It must be going around - I also had a Cream Legbar that I got to quit being broody in the nest box and then she started laying in the sandbox where the poop falls under the roosts. YUCK! I managed to get a metal grid over it to deter her, and she's back to the nest boxes (for now...)

WOW!! What a haul LMAO! How many did you set? I must have missed it71 have hatched so far.
sorry for your loss.Tick hatched 10, then took her babies off the nest and left several eggs that were still hatching behind. I took them inside, and put them in the brooder of all places to keep them from freezing to death. My incubator is busted. I didn't have much hope. 1 pipped recently, 2 might be dead, and 3 of those eggs have hatched - one black sex link rooster, one baby I had to help because they were stuck in the shell with yolk (they kicked through it before I even got the egg inside.. I thought it was sticky chick, I wish I'd been right. I do not think they will make it but we're trying,) and this cute thing!
So that's what a plain black, non-fibro scaleless looks like. Someone stepped on the poor thing after tromping through a cecal so he has a scab lookin' poo smear in that last photo, but the rest of the coloring is natural. Sadly they seem like they might also have curled toes and a weird leg positioning just like Benjamin Button. I can't.. really tell? It looked like it might be so while I took these photos, but now they are back in the brooder and they seem normal. They JUST popped out so I guess I need to give them time.. they had to deal with some extreme temperature fluctuations and a really long hatch thanks to momma leaving the nest.
This whole hatch has been really emotional. One of the babies momma Tick took outside before I could stop her was injured and has a leg that was cut badly but might also be broken that we're trying to help, then there's the chick that accidentally eviscerated itself, and this little one possibly being a source of fresh worry for their toes/legs.. and with Werewolf giving me bad offspring he needs to go. I can't have him in the breeding population. What "go" means, exactly, I don't know. I don't want to give him to someone who is just going to breed him to make a bunch more bum-leg-crock-foot birds. I know they will, even if I tell them not to. So I could give him to someone who would eat him, because I couldn't do it myself, but this is a bird I allowed myself to get attached to because I figured he was staying. He's not just a breeder, he's my pet. I don't have the money to build another pen yet, since I don't have a bunch of power tools and a vehicle to drive around gathering up reclaimable lumber. A conundrum! I've honestly been puzzling over the solution for some time, since both Tugboat and Werewolf are going to be out of a job once I have a scaleless rooster grown to size.
