Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I really liked the share on this NN article:

http://www.aviculture-europe.nl/nummers/08e04a04.pdf

The most interesting thing to me was the observation that the Naked Necks were the only ones able to survive in Africa's extreme heat. Sure does back up my personal experiences raising them here in AZ.

My only issue with this article is the claim that NNs don't lay 200 eggs per year. One of my girls alone, and she's not exceptional in my flock, has laid 212 eggs since Feb 29th of this year, and she's in her second year of laying AND her eggs are always 2.3 ounces or bigger AND she laid straight through molt. I get 4-6 X-Lg eggs from her per week with no artificial lighting, and she's not even my best layer!

*pops out of lurking* I 100% agree about Dun, I personally find it more visually appealing, albeit the genetics confuse me~

ME TOO!!!!!

It works much like the blue gene- black/blue/splash.

It has problems with bad naming habits.. the same dun gene is called fawn, chocolate(despite another sex linked gene also being chocolate...), khaki etc.

It also varies a bit in color.. some duns look rather like some shades of blue chickens.

Okay, this actually cleared up a lot for me....but my head still hurts from even trying to decipher everything I've read here the past few days. I'm getting pretty good at getting the sizes and proportions I want in my NNs without worrying about colors of feathers or shanks and just enjoying the surprise factor. So far I've been surprised with buff barring and birchen-esque birds, plus some gorgeous reds and even some unexpected partridge, lacing and penciling. Every time someone tells me, "I've been trying to get that look! How did you do it?" All I can do is smile, shrug and admit that I've just been really, really lucky plus got some great suggestions and inspiration here from folks like you. It's finally dawning on me that if I want to take on the SOP NN project and the Aloha NN project I'm going to really have to buckle down and spend some serious time both compiling and studying color genetics.

OK - but I don't have the ability to set up multiple additional separate pens, and hatch lots, so my ability to make a lot of headway might be limited... Gotta think through...
Quote: Fun!!!!! Between that and whatever I get out of Snape's pen, I'll be on my way to lots of pretty, different looking NNs!!!

I can't believe it's already been a week since the first of my latest hatch hatched. Baby photo time!

The first chick to hatch, and a definite favorite:

This one is the more purely buff (so far) I think I've ever hatched:

And now, just an interesting assortment of feather patterns emerging...at least interesting to me:

And this one looks almost khaki-beige to me:

Oh, and here are the two chicks hatched by my little Silkie. They're now 2 weeks old...though I think at least one of the "Bonnie & Clyde" duo will need to be renamed.

They are looking like Clyde and Bonnie to me (top boy bottom girl) But it's still early and from pics isn't that easy unless they are obvious!
